Better Together

Your challenge is to create a tool, app, or resource that helps close a gap that causes people to experience inequality. This combination of humanity and technology should eliminate or lessen a systemic issue and educate the user so they can grow.

The STEAM future is intercultural

Summary

Building an inclusive world is a today's society necessity, on Mexico's case, it has diverse cultures, thus highlighting the need to be inclusive with indigenous cultures. According to the National Commission for the Development of Indigenous People, there are 68 ethnolinguistic groups in Mexico. For the aforementioned reasons, this is a project that aims to promote technological science, art and mathematical learning, aimed at indigenous communities who speak the Nahuatl language. Therefore, it intends to solve the lack of access to information in their own language that children from Nahuatl speaking communities experience, to avoid their exclution accessing science and technology.

How We Developed This Project

The STEAM Future is intercultural project is being developed through a responsive web page designed for children to have access to through mobile devices and personal computers.

This website includes three main sections for STEAM learning, providing information, fun games, and a space for social interaction between visitors. All of this translated into the Nahuatl language. These three units were chosen using this same language vocabulary, distributed in the following way:

•Technologic science (amantekayotl): which will contain information taken from the NASA news and tools to promote computational thinking, as well as exercises for learning Scratch, the visual language.

•Mathematics (tlapoualmatilistli): games and exercises will be included to encourage mathematical thinking.

•Art (toltekayotl): In this section, poetry works, literature, and representative paintings of Mexican culture will be published.

In addition to this, users will be able to create an account to interact with "The STEAM Future is intercultural"'s community, through commenting on the news and other published content.

Another section was added for those interested in the Nahuatl speaking cultures who want to register as donors, allowing the project to continue its task of promoting the language.

Which tools did you use?

Html, CSS, SCSS, JavaScript and JS were used in web development, powered by jQuery as the front. Creating the database was possible through the use of PHP, myql and AJAX. As for graphic design and development, CorelDraw, Photoshop, Canva, and Genially were the tools being used.

As for the translations, they are being made using tools such as Nahuatl dictionaries, alongside consultations with a specialist in this language.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

The information from NASA, the most relevant news from NASA will be integrated so that indigenous communities have access to aerospace science and technology.
