Better Together

Your challenge is to create a tool, app, or resource that helps close a gap that causes people to experience inequality. This combination of humanity and technology should eliminate or lessen a systemic issue and educate the user so they can grow.

The Gaia Initiation

Summary

Gender bias for female scientist in Nasa was something they had to experience in their day-to-day professional life, that still did not stop them from being an integral part of all the missions, they fought for equality in administrative positions and with decades came the result of their work, a more equal opportunity for women, they raised their voice and so should we. We need to feel that we are part of the present struggle by showing a linear progression of women role in Nasa throughout the years, this is a direct link between social struggle and the representation of women in science, one cannot do without the other, a struggle that starts on Earth and takes us to the stars.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We developed a website where we aimed to make an impact on gender inequality in professional life. At the main page, there will be a short description of the project. As we go deep into the website, we will see a timeline showing women who worked for NASA and changed the roles in professional life. There will be the stories of woman telling how each woman in administrative or science position in NASA helped in creating a more equal space of opportunities, we should learn from what they said, and apply it. We should learn how they struggled and fight for a future where they achieved the firsts in women history and where we are better together. It will also give some data about gender equality in NASA and all around the world. For example in NASA's data, we will put a chart in which the percentage of women and men graduating from NASA astronauts class by cohort from 1960s to 2017. And we will see a map, taken from UN, where we can see the gender equality at work in different countries. The map will be updated as UN updates it. We will also talk about the movement where women will raise their voices. There will be two different sections. In the first section, women will share their stories under the sections of I communicate, I advocate and I activate. In I communicate section, women will talk to each other to inspire. In I advocate, women will show their advocation. In I activate, women will talk about their movement against the gender inequality. In the second section, we will see a map and voice icons. When we click the voice icons, we will hear women voices, who inspired and/or was inspired. Women will be able to save their voices and share with others to inspire others. They will raise their voice. And they will be stronger together.

How We Developed This Project

We have a community called Labredoor in which we have some values which are rationality, unity, equality of opportunity and liberty. In here, everyone is equal regardless of their sexes, nationalities or backgrounds. The most inspirational thing in our life was this community. We are also a group of people who are working in social projects about equalities. While we were checking the challenges, we were searching at the same time. As we read the stories of the women who worked for NASA, we decided to choose this challenge. While developing this project, we made a to do list. First, we read the stories. Then, we started searching for the data. Then we decided to develop a website to inspire the other women. We only used open mock-up websites. We don't have any coder in our team, so we couldn't make it as a real website.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used these data to analyze the change of gender equality throughout the years. Our data shows how the women contributed and helped NASA to achieve their critical mission on space. These papers shed light on the problems women endure in order to achieve success on STEM field.
