Better Together

Your challenge is to create a tool, app, or resource that helps close a gap that causes people to experience inequality. This combination of humanity and technology should eliminate or lessen a systemic issue and educate the user so they can grow.

Assistive System based Mouse for Specially Abled People and Specially Abled Astronauts

Summary

If we can Control Computer we can control almost everything. To control Computer all we need is a Mouse so I've developed a Mouse for people with physical disabilities which prevent them from using a mouse. For people with limited mobility, this can be held or attached to any part of their body - move your head, your foot, your arm, anything. This would help people with paralyzed or without having lower and upper limbs to use the innovative projects, Websites, Apps made by participants and to access data by NASA and to innovate for the same. Even this is the First Mouse Made for Specially Abled Astronauts that would work in Space too. 29% people of world's Population are physically disabled.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The popularization and constant technological advances of computers have made them a necessary and almost inevitable item in many people’s lives. But unfortunately, people with physical disability or some sort of condition that impedes movement of all the four limbs are unable to adequately use these computers to its fullest.

Now to control and use a computer, the most basic thing that is required is a mouse and a keyboard.

I've a friend who is physically challenged but he wanted to be an astronaut.

Moreover he wanted to access the Projects made by my Fellow Mates and wanted to use and View Data provided by NASA, ESA, JAXA, CSA, CNES and even he was thinking about participating in Nasa Space App Challenge 2021.

No doubt he is very Smart and Intelligent and he must be too due to Neuroplasticity Not having limbs and paralyzed legs gave him more ability of thinking power which is the principle of Neuroplasticity.

Now If we search on google it says that 29% of the population is suffering from Physical disability. My Fellow Mates participants in NASA Space App is making a lots of projects. But are these projects accessible to everyone in the World? Specially Abled people is still not been able to use them and we shouldn't miss out out these Intelligent people, they can bring out the best projects in the world due to their intellect.

So, the objective of this project was to develop a pointing device controlled by any movement

(head movement) that had the same functions as a conventional mouse and to evaluate the performance of the proposed device when operated by quadriplegic or physically challenged users.

So I started working in this field to Make it possible to Specially abled people in using the projects made by all the participants and accessing NASA ESA, JAXA, CSA, CNES DATA and thereby Made this Project and this is what my chosen Problem Statement "Better Together" Expects from Us.

How We Developed This Project

As Nasa Space App Challenge 2020 Theme is "Take Action" . So our prime focus was to Take Action and make the final product so that we don't only talk and have model in softcopy but we wanted it to be in our hands. So We built the Final Product which is Working!

Here we are with our Final Product of Mouse for Specially Abled people :

Approach

We thought that if we can develop something out of which we can control Computer we are almost done So I focused on building an assistive system for them.

Working in summary

We used MEMS(microelectromechanical systems) gyroscopes. MEMS are angular rate sensors, which are used whenever rate of turn (Β°/s) sensing is required without a fixed point of reference or it is the angular acceleration.

We then Mapped it to displacement of the coordinate of Screen of the Desktop.

We have Used then Mouse library and connected it with the output of MEMs via Microcontroller.

We worked with I2C communication protocol

For the Click We used a cheap sound sensor whose work is to send signals whenever there is a blow and then map it to 0-1023 and from there whenever we get a value greater than 500 we make a signal and then we map it to the mouse click libraries and thereby click occurs!

Next problem was that It was working great with left click but what about other clicks so After thinking a lot about it we thought of building UI for our Project so that It can have more Clicks and We Coded in Java and Built the UI

(Sahayak is the name Given by Our Team)

It worked Great! As per the Click It changes the click mode we made to that if we get this click then this button should Work!

We had to think about lots of different

  • Coding techniques
  • Optimization of Code
  • Changing Algorithms
  • Integration of Java and C++
  • Minor but Mind Boggling Algorithms

and thereby Reached to the Solution after days and Hours of Work!

Functions :
  • left click of Mouse
  • right click of Mouse
  • left click and hold of Mouse
  • Works with Virtual Keyboard

and we can have much more functions.

Construction(Hardware) :

For Mouse :

We've used

  • Microcontroller
  • Cheap Sound sensor
  • Gyroscope (MEMS based)

For Keyboard :

We'll use

  • Virtual Keyboard

For the Rover prototype(this is just for a different kind of application by this Even Cars Could be controlled by the People with paralyzed or with No hands and legs) :

  • Arduino
  • Motor Driver L298N
  • nrf24l01
  • Lead Acid Battery

Algorithm
  • Take Values of angular acceleration from any movement (Head Movement)
  • Puts Cursor on the screen as per the Coordinate
  • Checks for the Mode from the Software
  • Accordingly Clicks when Sound sensor have analog value more than 2.5v
  • Repeat from Top

Design Process
  • For the Box - Acrylic Sheet
  • For the Band - Jute belt
  • For the Support of Sound Sensor - Metal Spring

Coding languages
  • C++
  • Java

Software
  • Arduino IDE
  • Processing

Affordability
  • Microcontroller $ 6
  • (MEMs based Gyroscope) $ 2
  • Cheap Sound Sensor $ 1
  • Fabrication $ 1
  • TOTAL $ 10
It is a cost effective Solution and is affordable to everyone in Need!

I hereby Claim the Originality of my Project and this technique is not available in the Whole Internet

Future Aspects

Will Extend it to more types of disability (one of the Rule of "Better Together")

User Manual

Install a Small Software for accessing different clicks(don't Install if you want to use just the left click) and Just Plugin and Play

How I'm claiming that It would work in Space?

I've used Gyroscope and the governing Equation of Gyroscope is :

𝑀_𝑒π‘₯𝑑= I Ο‰γ€–" Ο‰" 〗𝑝

I = mass Moment of inertia of Spinning

Ο‰ = angular speed of rotation about its own axis(angular speed of spinning)

γ€–" Ο‰" 〗𝑝 = angular velocity of precession.(angular velocity with which it precess to generate gyroscopic couple)

𝑀_𝑒π‘₯𝑑 π‘‘π‘–π‘Ÿπ‘’π‘π‘‘𝑙𝑦 π‘π‘Ÿπ‘œπ‘π‘œπ‘‘π‘œπ‘›π‘Žπ‘™γ€–" Ο‰" 〗𝑝

When   π‘€_𝑒π‘₯𝑑=0 Then  γ€–" Ο‰" 〗𝑝=0

Mass Moment of Inertia cannot change

m will remain constant for our purpose

k (radius of gyration) is a geometric quantity

I=mπ‘˜^2

Ο‰ =VxR there is no term of gravity and it would even work more better in Vacuum due to less friction. (V = Velocity, R= Radius(a length))

γ€–" Ο‰" 〗𝑝 is also the same as Ο‰ which will depend upon V and R!

So there we are done We have an equation which don't have a gravity dependence Hence It will work in Space without gravity and in Vacuum.

  • Thereby It became the First Mouse for Specially Abled People that would Work in Space.
  • It can be used by Normal Astronauts too in case of Emergency Paralysis of Hands or legs or both
  • If we are can think of colonizing planets then why not start with training a specially abled Astronaut.

Specially abled Astronauts can be of a great use

Disabled astronauts offer unique solutions to emergencies in space

During the Mir fire, thick smoke obstructed the astronauts’ vision. Without being able to see, the astronauts could not find the Mir’s fire extinguishers.

A blind astronaut would have had no difficulty locating the extinguishers or any of the station’s other vital tools as he/she is equipped with it. But malfunctioning lights present no problem to a blind astronaut.

Then there are people who have lost their limbs. Leglessness is no problem in space’s zero gravity. A legless astronaut can get into spaces in a craft that other astronauts may not be able to squeeze into.

And there’s another advantage of handicapped astronauts: neural plasticity. Research shows that the brain rewires itself to give superpowers to the disabled. For example, the blind develop supernormal senses of sound and touch. Amputees develop the ability to accomplish miracles of strength and dexterity, like the championship running of Oscar Pistorius. In addition, astronauts missing arms can be equipped with specialized prosthetics that allow deeds beyond the powers of five fingers.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

I'm Using almost all Data by NASA (CSA, CNES, JAXA, ESA ) as I am Making these data and Projects of participants and making them accessible to 29% of the world which are Specially Abled People.
