FloodWiz has received the following awards and nominations. Way to go!
Rwanda has been increasingly experiencing floods which affect the livelihood of Rwandans, the economy and infrastructure. We developed this project to give the government and other decision makers visual access to data on floods in the country.
This solution will assist government authorities to make data led decisions and increase efficiency in allocating resources to affected areas in order of urgency, and help other institutions such as NGOs which do planning and development activities in Rwanda to plan ahead on how to help the people that live in those areas and avail data on which areas are most vulnerable to those floods.
It shows visualised data on the map of Rwanda, showing the statistics of flood cases in Rwanda per district.
It retrieves the data of flood damages from a JSON file and displays it on the map. One can view the data by clicking on a district.
We hope that our project will be able to help institutions in charge of Disaster Management to be able to plan well ahead of these events. We also hope that the number of lives lost in floods and damages to property can be minimised.
We were inspired to choose this challenge because floods are a big concern in our country that have caused tremendous loss as climate change worsens and we wanted to contribute to its management.
We conducted a current situation analysis including National strategies and plans to manage natural disasters and benchmarked against global best practices to develop the best possible method to digitally access and display data regarding flooding in Rwanda.
We used NASA data to get more on the topic on a global perspective and strengthen our idea. We obtained historical data on flooding from the Ministry In Charge of disaster Management in Rwanda(MINEMA). We made use of the OpenStreetMap API and the leafletjs library to display the data on the Rwandan map
