A Flood of Ideas

Your challenge is to develop a new methodology or algorithm that leverages Earth observation and critical infrastructure datasets to estimate damages to infrastructure caused by flooding. Make a measurable impact on the resilience of nations by helping the Earth observations community contribute to the United Nations’ primary effort to reduce disaster risk!

Metric Earth

Summary

Natural disaster has become a topic that is unavoidable. Humans nowadays are lacking knowledge of surviving in natural disasters, unaware of the nearest protection shelter and getting too much false warning which then leads to ignorance of the true warning. Thus, we have created an app called “Metric Earth” with the aim to fulfill the objectives of minimizing the death rate from natural disasters. Besides, it will provide some exact ways to users on what to do when a natural disaster happens. Moreover, users can be educated on the surviving technique through “Metric Earth” where it is able to guide the users what they should do to minimize the injuries count.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We have developed an application called “Metric Earth”. This application will spread positive zest in the society by conveying awareness of the upcoming crisis, accommodating the anxiety of the society and providing responsive instructions to them. Through this application we want to minimise the death rate and injuries from natural disasters, and let the user know beforehand on how to prepare themselves and take precautions when there is an upcoming event.

How We Developed This Project

We chose the confront challenge because we felt like there is lack of awareness and also initiatives in the community. We believe our app is able to have a solution to these drowned problems that have been existing for a long time. My team and I plan to use Marvel to build an alpha version of our app with one main reason which is ease of use. One of the problems we faced when making the app is that how are we going to update the data when a natural disaster happen and as we know natural disaster like earthquake will take away the internet for quite some time after it occur.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used data from CSA which is the Cyclone Amphan in Bangladesh. We have referenced it too. With this data, we can constantly analyse Cyclone Amphan since our project, "Metric Earth" is designed to help minimising the impacts brought by natural disasters.
