A Flood of Ideas

Your challenge is to develop a new methodology or algorithm that leverages Earth observation and critical infrastructure datasets to estimate damages to infrastructure caused by flooding. Make a measurable impact on the resilience of nations by helping the Earth observations community contribute to the United Nations’ primary effort to reduce disaster risk!

Disaster monitoring system

Summary

There are many Natural disasters that damage the environment and the people living in it. Earthquakes, cyclones, floods, Tsunami are some example. The severity or degree of damage can be further divided into different categories. Due to this many lives are at high risk either they are humans or wildlife’s. So, we are planning to design an application which will help to detect the disaster and gave alert message to the user so that they can use the needed safety measures and also alert others. This application works online so its directly connected with disaster management office which will get the data and transfer to the user Smartphone. For the case of international disaster event it uses

How We Addressed This Challenge

Due to many disaster event critical infrastructure had high impact in this context includes health and educational facilities, transportation, and communications sectors and similar systems. For the solution we are planning to design an application which will help to detect the disaster and gave alert message to the user so that they can use the needed safety measures and also alert others. This application works online so its directly connected with disaster management office which will get the data and transfer to the user Smartphone. For the case of international disaster event it uses satellite to get the data. In future we are planning to make it offline by uniting with telecommunication system.

How We Developed This Project

As we seen our country past disaster event which include earthquake or flood or landslide in all the cases people are facing huge problems. Some loose their life’s, some loose their cattle’s, some lose their crops which not only affect the personal lives but it also affects the economics of the country, the whole nation is on great loose. Due to this different infrastructure got collapsed affecting personal lives.

So we came up to an idea that what happen when if we already alert the disaster so that the damage be limited.

Communication is the only tool which will help to alert the people or helps people to spread awareness about it. The most common tool in this era is smartphone everyone has it so came to an idea of developing an application which will alert the people.

The main problem is that to record something we have to use special sensor or device and providing the device to each user is not possible so we think of having collaboration with disaster management office so that whenever the threads are found it directly send alert information to app.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Fire monitoring through the Charter:Through the International Charter, various satellite images have provided valuable information including quick statistics and the locations of these extensive disasters, especially for fires which are fast-growing and offer limited site visits. The data provided by the Charter members offers rapid and effective response to fires to support national disaster organizations worldwide.

RecentlyNASA’s Disasters Response Program, combined with its fleet of Earth Observing satellites, is helping scientists and decision-makers improve prediction of, preparation for, response to, and recovery from flood disasters. Our Agency’s flood preparedness and response capabilities include satellite observations, data systems, and modeling capabilities divided into two core areas:

1.   Global Flood Prediction and Warning (weather prediction coupled with increasingly accurate satellite observations and hydrological models):

o  Global Flood Monitoring System (GFMS)

o  Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG)

o  Real-Time Land Information System (LIS)

2.   Global Flood Mapping and Damage Assessment (from the observed satellite time series record of flood events, and also from modeling):

If these kinds of event can be predictable than we are just providing information to the local peoples so they can be aware and make others aware. Only thing we are missing are resources and skilled manpower on this.
