A Flood of Ideas

Your challenge is to develop a new methodology or algorithm that leverages Earth observation and critical infrastructure datasets to estimate damages to infrastructure caused by flooding. Make a measurable impact on the resilience of nations by helping the Earth observations community contribute to the United Nations’ primary effort to reduce disaster risk!

Project Thias

Summary

Many disasters are happening today. Floods are one of the most damaging of these. We believe that in order to effectively reduce and prevent flood damage, the risks should be anticipated and this issue should be viewed from a broad perspective. For this, we started the Thias project. Thias is a system that collects information on this subject, makes it accessible and enables regional evaluations outside of them.

How We Addressed This Challenge

1-Accessible Information

Our project collects a lot of data on different subjects from different data sources, finds and shows their common points. Thanks to this, it provides people who can give an idea about this topic from a broader perspective.

2-Identifying The Risk

Our project determines the risk in a region in advance thanks to the grading system and ensures that measures are taken to reduce the damage of the problem before it occurs. The main purpose of this is to direct people to important problems and to set priorities.

How We Developed This Project

The Need

When we first started to investigate the subject, we encountered some difficulties regarding the subject. The most notable of these was that the impact of floods generally affected too many different factors. However, the problem is not the lack of solutions, but we saw the need for a solution that combines all issues under a single roof, although there are many solutions for every issue.

The Free Data

When we examined the problems, we noticed that the solutions are old and do not contain innovations in general. In most solutions, we added factors such as satellite data that can be used in general.

The Warnings

When we looked at the world in general, we realized that in disasters, more attention is given to post-disaster measures rather than pre-disaster measures, therefore we thought that we should develop a system to determine the risk situations of the regions.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

One of the main issues this project focuses on is the modernization of solutions and bringing innovations. Therefore, we decided to add these data to better understand the problems and when they can be added to solutions.
