A Flood of Ideas

Your challenge is to develop a new methodology or algorithm that leverages Earth observation and critical infrastructure datasets to estimate damages to infrastructure caused by flooding. Make a measurable impact on the resilience of nations by helping the Earth observations community contribute to the United Nations’ primary effort to reduce disaster risk!

FLOOD SHIELD save lives

Summary

Flood Shield acknowledges and guides people about flood management. As floods are most recurring natural disaster which leads to a major loss of human life and wealth, it will provide information to users about pre and post conditions of flood by providing information about water and dam level, and adding alerts with help of future flood mapping along with the precautions and emergency contacts.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Team Techartist has developed an application named Flood Shield - save lives which acknowledges and guides people more about flood and disaster management. As floods are most recurring natural disaster which leads to a major loss of human life and wealth. Our application provides information and helps users about pre and post conditions of flood by providing information about water and dam level with knowledge of damage potential and the infrastructural damage with it. It also alerts the user when water level exceeds flood level with the use high risk flood mapping using DATA from NASA and other organisations like JAXA, CSA , CNES and GIS along with the precautions and emergency contacts of the rescue organizations. The data that we will use from NASA includes NASA Disasters Mapping Portal which is a web platform that provides access to near real-time and value added data products in geographic information system (GIS) format, through web applications, map layers, and API's. And the data from the new JAXA website provides hourly global measurements of precipitation which will provide us information continuosly related to water level, hence helping in preparing for flood before they occur, while the radars used by CSA is an excellent tool to monitor and forecast floods.

Our mission is to apprise each and everyone to fight back these unfavorable flood conditions and make their cities a better place to live in.

How We Developed This Project

This is a list of notable recorded floods that have occurred in India like the floods that occured recently in Madhya Pradesh and Bihar or in the East India. Floods have always been the most common natural disaster in India. Talking specifically about the 2013 north indian floods, the cloudburst centered on the North Indian state of Uttarakhand caused devastating floods and landslides becoming the country's worst natural disaster since the 2004 tsunami. Over 89% of the casualties were occurred in Uttarakhand which included more than 5,700 people that were presumed dead. This in total included 934 local residents, so this incident inspired us to do something for human life and think about strategies and methods which we can apply to avoid such kind of disaster in future.

Our mission is to apprise and guide each and everyone to fight back these unpropitious flood conditions and make their cities a better place to live in.

For coding we, started from Java, Kotlin, android/XML coding and then lead by CSS coding while designing the project prototype. When real implementation of the coding ideas came in picture, we used Android studio with programming in Java and XML and for designing and sharing ideas we looked forward at prototyping with Figma where we could contribute our ideas simultaneously as a team.

The team Techartist on the whole, is a very diverse team with members residing in different regions, and that is the main problem that we experienced while working on the project where interactions became a problem at times but at the same time working alongside people who uplift each other during low times and believing in the vision is an achievement. And at the end coming up with a realistic solution to the vision is an Award. With the takeaway achievement of gaining a lot of technical knowledge, interacting with new people, and building up confidence and personality development.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

To over come the high risk of flood, we have featured some sections in the application like mapping, alert, damage potential, water level and dam level . For which we used DATA from NASA and other organisations like JAXA, CSA , CNES and GIS along with the precautions and emergency contacts of the rescue organizations. The CNES softwares for risk and disaster management, helps us in getting alerts in the alarming condition.

Data & Resources

For reference we have used DATA from NASA and different organisations like JAXA, CNES, CSA and GIS. To fight the high risk in the flood prone areas. We have featured our application with mapping system, alert, damage potential, water level and dam level to overcome the conditions. For which we used DATA from NASA and other organisations like JAXA, CSA , CNES and GIS along with the precautions and emergency contacts of the rescue organizations. The data that we will use from NASA includes NASA Disasters Mapping Portalwhich is a web platform that provides access to near real-time and value added data products in geographic information system (GIS) format, through web applications, map layers, and API's. And the data from the new JAXA website provides hourly global measurements of precipitation which will provide us information continuosly related to water level. While the radars used by CSA is an excellent tool to monitor and forecast floods. It acquires multiple RADARSAT-1 and RADARSAT-2 images over affected areas during the week following the flood event. CNES softwares for risk and disaster management provides the alert in the alarming weather conditions. The GIS (Geographical Information System) provides us with the geographical information related to flood prone areas and alarming weather.
