A Flood of Ideas

Your challenge is to develop a new methodology or algorithm that leverages Earth observation and critical infrastructure datasets to estimate damages to infrastructure caused by flooding. Make a measurable impact on the resilience of nations by helping the Earth observations community contribute to the United Nations’ primary effort to reduce disaster risk!

Hermes

Summary

Floods are a very important problem in many cities of the world, according to the Insurance Journal in 2019 total capital losses caused by floods was estimated in US$8 Billion.Hermes is an entire system that can achieve reduce the risks of losses, all this through a network of sensors and cloud computing, which ultimate purpose is alert of anomalies in the hydrologic systems of cities with high risk of flood.Equipped with IoT technology, sensors and cloud servers can offer a making decisions data, at the same time anticipate the water behavior in floods, and how it can affect urban zones around the world. We hope Hermes can evolve into a complex solution in the future.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We developed Hermes, like a system that can achieve reduce life and material losses, it is based in IoT technology, that include sensors connected to a cloud computing server, which allows send push notifications to cellphones through a mobile app, Hermes also can offer sends SMS messages to the urban zones affected with WIFI internet disconnection.

Hermes work with a network of sensors that allow to get data from environmental variables and send it to the cloud via Cellular Networks, with this fundamental idea Hermes can offer precisely and timely information of anomalies in rivers, lakes, and sea borders.

Hermes becomes important when it can help people evacuate at the right time and save their material goods. Considering Hermes as a tool that can prevent families lost all the things that make life better.

We hope Hermes could help people around the world to save their material goods in difficult situations, and even make disasters have less impact in the life of people exposed to flood risk. We have high expectations that in the future Hermes can evolve to a more complex system that allows prevent other types of natural disasters.

How We Developed This Project

The principal motivation to create Hermes, is use IoT technology to help people in hard times. Due that the IoT technology can be cheap in costs of installation and operation we can offer an alert to people with minor costs of operation.

Hardware

Sensors are developed over microcontroller systems with Cellular Network connectivity (https://www.sierrawireless.com/iot-blog/cellular-iot-connectivity-for-business/) which allows make telemetry measures like water level, behavior of water level (ascending of descending) and send all data to a cloud computing server through some services like Google Firebase (https://firebase.google.com/) and AWS (https://aws.amazon.com/).

Software

Cloud computing servers allows us get all sensor data and process it, with the purpose of send notifications via mobile, allowing the people being alerted over future flood problems. All data () is processed via Python using datasets from NASA databases to generate maps that are showed

through a web application (https://brn2bwild.github.io/spaceapp/) that allows show simple information to end user, with the idea of making easy take difficult decisions, like evacuate

their houses at the right time.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

The datasets used to create flood alert from Hermes were taken from Official Pages from INEGI Hydrology Service (https://www.inegi.org.mx/temas/hidrografia/) and the PMM Precipitation and Applications Publisher API (https://pmmpublisher.pps.eosdis.nasa.gov/docs), these tools were used to provide Hermes the ability created visual references for the optimal sensors localization at the same time give the end user visual information.

Considering that Hermes takes references from the level of hydrologic systems to detect anomalies the entire system has the responsibility to send alerts to the users with enough time to allow people evacuate the zones with flood risks.
