A Flood of Ideas

Your challenge is to develop a new methodology or algorithm that leverages Earth observation and critical infrastructure datasets to estimate damages to infrastructure caused by flooding. Make a measurable impact on the resilience of nations by helping the Earth observations community contribute to the United Nations’ primary effort to reduce disaster risk!

Smart Dam

Summary

We think in new ways to limit the floods and store the excess water is being found bypassing the excess water through pipes to subside in reservoirs.Using an ultra-Sonic Sensor, when the water level increases in the river noticed that and gives a command to the reservoirs to be opened by using a servo motor then, the water will be transferred through the pipes to subside in the reservoirs. When the water level decreases in the river noticed that and give a command to the reservoirs to be opened by using servo, to transfer the water from the reservoirs to the river to compensate the lack of water and by the pump of water from and to the reservoirs we can generate electricity.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We will develop a system to decrease the danger of floods. It will detect the flood. Then, some tubes will be opened to transfer the water to another place and store it. The tubes will have motors to generate electricity. the prototype will be manufactured to achieve the highest result. So, we will use an Ultra Sonic sensor to detect the height of the water in the river. Then, it will be connected with Arduino Uno. Besides, the prototype will include tubes with a servo motor that will open the tubes and close it. also, the water will be used to generate electricity by motors. After the flood, there is pump to push the water to the river to use it. Our system will be the best choice instead of dams because they are very expensive. Besides, if the dam is destroyed, the city will have to face a Huge flood.

How We Developed This Project

Because there are a lot of floods around the world. Besides, its big danger on the poor towns. So, we chose this challenge to help the world surviving from it. The project is improving the present dams and decreasing its cost. We used ultrasonic sensor, Arduino Uno, servo motor, tubes, Pump and electricity generators in the hardware prototype. Besides, we controlled the Arduino by Arduino IDE that uses C programming language. Also, we used proteus to make a simulation of the prototype. After that, we have achieved our goals to make a good system that doesn’t need a big money to build not as the dams.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

•Global Flood Monitoring System (GFMS)

•Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG)

•Real-Time Land Information System (LIS)

•Near Real Time (NRT) MODIS Flood Mapping

•ISS Handheld Digital Camera Photography

•Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis (ARIA) Center for Natural Hazards

It is known that recent studies have highlighted how local investments in simple flood preparations often experience 70% property damage when floods occur. But achieving such benefits on a global scale requires a full understanding of the characteristics of flood vulnerability. NASA's Disaster Response Program, along with its fleet of Earth observation satellites, helps scientists and decision-makers improve flood disaster forecasting, preparedness, response and recovery.

Our agency's flood preparedness and response capabilities include satellite observations, data systems, and modeling capabilities divided into two main areas:

- Global Flood Forecasting and Warning (weather forecasting combined with accurate satellite observations and hydrological models)

- Global flood mapping and damage assessment (from the observed time series record of flood events, as well as from modeling)

This is important in order to understand the problem, in order to draw a strong conclusion to solve the problem.
