We developed a website to help people see the potential costs of active or potential wildfires.
Organizations such as the USDA: United States Department of Agriculture and USFA: United States Fire Administration would benefit from having an idea of what type of budget should be put in place and how that might change in the future.
Our project allows for a user to click on a current fire and get the related costs. It also allows for users to see the potential cost of a fire that could happen in the future in a chosen area. It works by taking data about past fires as a way of training our model. Also, the predicted cost takes into account inflation through a formula that is included.
It would be nice for this to be able to grow and offer this type of data for other countries.
Our team wanted to do this challenge because it interested us.
Our approach to developing this project was to work on sections and evolve the different sections. Some of the team members worked on back end code while others worked on front end code. We started with trying to figure out what our solution would be and how we would implement it. We moved into code and research.
We used Python, Flask, GitHub, React, and Heroku. Eclipse, Visual Studio, and the Command line were also used.
Two issues that our team had was finding the data to use to train the model, and errors that occurred in code that we were learning how to write during this challenge.
We were able to figure out how to fix most of those errors and progress further through our project. Also, we got an API written to connect the front end and back end of the project.
We viewed the active maps from NASA, which influenced how we wanted users to interact with the wildfires throughout the United States to get their data. Users are able to move around on our map and zoom in and out on it.
This is setup so that anyone who has the link can access the document.
We had a bunch of resources that we used in some way, whether we pulled data from them or they influenced how we approached the problem.
