Spot That Fire V3.0

Recent wildfires worldwide have demonstrated the importance of rapid wildfire detection, mitigation, and community impact assessment analysis. Your challenge is to develop and/or augment an existing application to detect, predict, and assess the economic impacts from actual or potential wildfires by leveraging high-frequency data from a new generation of geostationary satellites, data from polar-orbiting environmental satellites, and other open-source datasets.

Ignis

Summary

Ignis is a system that aggregates information for fire and burn combat, allowing the responsible authorities to save time and allocate resources in more efficient ways. It was designed to be fed with information from various sources, such as: reports of outbreaks of fires through an application linked to the platform in which it is possible to forward media and geolocation, making these reports more reliable, another form of data collection is a possible partnership with the Integrated Center of Public Security Operations of Mato Grosso to access the cameras and using computer vision for the intelligent detection of fires throughout the city, among other sources for detection in real time.

How We Addressed This Challenge

With Ignis our goal is to make faster the detection of fires, both forest and urban, functioning as a data center and a platform to support the competent authorities in fighting fires.

How We Developed This Project

Initially we divided the tasks by aptitude of each member of the group in order to speed up the development of the project. Creating a dashboard where the focus of fires is visible in real time and also the focus already contained using the data provided by the space agency. We filter the data as latitude and longitude to provide only the information of the region we live.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Agency data was used to monitor larger scale fires in NRT (Near Real Time), use it to collect data and compare it in order to check the frequency of fire outbreaks and notify possible new fire sites for precautions to be taken. Most of the data was captured from NASA's FIRMS.
