Spot That Fire V3.0

Recent wildfires worldwide have demonstrated the importance of rapid wildfire detection, mitigation, and community impact assessment analysis. Your challenge is to develop and/or augment an existing application to detect, predict, and assess the economic impacts from actual or potential wildfires by leveraging high-frequency data from a new generation of geostationary satellites, data from polar-orbiting environmental satellites, and other open-source datasets.

Summary

We propose an online/offline platform built to be a crowdsourcing tool for citizens to contribute to early detection, verification, and notification of wildfires using a mobile app and a USSD system.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We decided to build a crowdsourcing tool for citizens to contribute to early detection of fire. To achieve this goal, we will need to create a platform for verification and notification about wildfire accessible through a mobile app and USSD (for countries without internet access).

This platform will be designed to help people quickly draw attention to wildfire and will be built with the following functionalities:




  • Detection

Using an android mobile app people can take pictures of fire

Using USSD, people are also able to send information about a fire directly to our API




  • Verification

Using Machine Learning, we can confirm that any picture taken is really a fire. We will crosscheck this information with NASA's satellite data, and if this is confirmed we directly contact the appropriate authorities.




  • Notification

Using our API we will be able to send SMS or Email to the different appropriate authorities.

For the next step we are working on the following functionalities:




  • Visualization

We are building a web-based dashboard that displays relevant data about fires so that the authorities could learn from it. This learning will bring efficiency in mitigating wildfire.




  • Tracking

This functionality is supposed to use Realtime data from satellite to track the evolution of the fire and give to relevant authorities important information.

How We Developed This Project

This is still in the development phase and the final project isn't ready yet.

These functionalities are supposed to use Realtime data from satellite to track the evolution of the fire and give to relevant authorities important information. The information from NASA's satellite data will allow us to directly contact the appropriate authorities.
