Can You Hear Me Now?

Human missions to Mars are moving from the realm of science fiction to science fact. Your challenge is to design an interactive application to explore the challenge of communicating with astronauts on Mars from Earth.

NASA-MEC-P1: NASA - Mars-Earth Connection - Project 1

Summary

In order to improve the Mars-Earth communication, our team MEC-P1 had been based on three different ideas.1-For the data transmission, the DSN will be used, with the already existing antennas of our planet and 16 new and smaller ones to be installed on Mars2- In special cases when the communication gets harder, we will use of of the two relays orbiting between mars and earth3-NASA-MEC it`s an app that would help to the astronauts and people on our planet to get communicated, and will have an special section for the workers from nasa to help the with their job.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We develop 3 main ideas to solve the problem of communication with Mars, taking into account data transmission, special problems, private communication between astronauts and their families, the tasks to be carried out and the fact that dialogue is a fundamental tool for the correct development of missions. That is our goal, to develop an effective form of communication between Earth and Mars.

For the Mars-Earth data transmission we will use DSM, with the antennas already installed on Earth and 16 smaller antennas to install on Mars, in addition to 4 satellites in geostationary orbit

Also, two repeaters will be included that will help the two planets to communicate in the periods in which the sun intervenes between them. They would also be used as an intercom for existing and future missions because using it only as a repeater would not be economically viable.

The third point of our project is an app that will have a fast messaging system with which the astronauts will be able to communicate with family, friends and colleagues who have the app, as well as the research centers associated with the project.

The registration will be different for each type of user: on the one hand, accounts will be established for astronauts from Mars and NASA researchers, and on the other hand, they will be available for regular users, the inhabitants of planet Earth.

Our expectations with this project is to function in a more efficient and faster way than the current one.

How We Developed This Project

We know that the connection with other people means greater ease for understanding things since when there are intertwined thoughts and ideologies, human beings go through different objectives but under the same interest.

Considering that the communication of cosmonauts with their families is not very effective, as is interplatenatary communication in general, we start from this base to generate an efficient, comprehensive and innovative solution.

The tools used to develop the project were:

-Hardware: Intel Core7, mp4 compression format

-Software: Illustrator, Corel Draw, Sony Vegas, Google Drive, Scientific popularization websites, Google Translator, Google Meet application, Discord and WhatsApp

It should be noted that the Nasa proposal presents a work opportunity forming diverse teams, with the purpose of reflecting on a challenge that requires a review of knowledge, roles, strategies, spaces and times, to achieve an integrated proposal based on interdisciplinarity . So the start of the group was unexpected. The first difficulty that arose was the loss of a member of the team, whose programming knowledge was necessary for the development of the project.

Then, all the members participate vigorously in the project, we highlight the skills and knowledge of each member to analyze ideas and integrate knowledge, bearing in mind that it is important that the reflection be carried out with a holistic vision.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We use the information from the NASA website to obtain data from previous missions and projects to obtain images and to collect accurate data, we also look for information on the distance of the planets, the diameter and factors by which communication could be cut off
