Can You Hear Me Now?

Human missions to Mars are moving from the realm of science fiction to science fact. Your challenge is to design an interactive application to explore the challenge of communicating with astronauts on Mars from Earth.

Redphone

Summary

Through concepts, images and other tools, the user will browse information and data provided by NASA, in addition to having the experience of chatting with an informative chatbot to learn more about the difficulties of interplanetary communication. At the end of the journey, the person will be invited to reflect: what would it be like to live with our messages arriving with delay? And can only transmit a little bit of information? What do you propose? With that, we wish to inspire students and a whole future generation of scientists who will face these problems in the near future to think about new and more efficient ways to solve or mitigate the problems that we have today.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We developed a web application to share with students and other people that are interested with space exploration, informations about the deep space communications and to spread the cientific products of NASA to reach more people.

Our project adress this challenge by collecting information in NASA portals, put them in a concise and accessible way to reach students from basic to high school.

It works as a website, accessible through different platforms. This way we hope to achieve more common people and to inspire the future cientists to build innovative solutions.

How We Developed This Project

From a template containing the desired design, we developed the necessary code for the web pages. The chatbot was developed separately using Watson’s features and latter integrated into the project. Careful research was done to collect relevant and accurate facts about past and future technologies, as well as about Mars, using agency’s data to train the AI behind the chatbot.

We used as development tool VS Code, with our code being stored in GitHub and our project hosted on Heroku. The event provided access to Watson, which was used when developing our chatbot. To develop our backend, we used Django, an open source framework. Web pages were developed in HTML/CSS.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We collect information about current NASA missions that use the Deep Space Network in addition to compiling information about current and previous missions, such as Voyager and Apollo missions, as well as descriptions of the equipment in the probes sent to Mars based on the information that is published on the official mission pages.

In addition to just being easily accessible, we made quick readings of scientific articles made available on the website to try to transpose the scientific text in a clear and more accessible way for all audiences.

We used also data provided by NASA to compose the chatbot.
