Can You Hear Me Now?

Human missions to Mars are moving from the realm of science fiction to science fact. Your challenge is to design an interactive application to explore the challenge of communicating with astronauts on Mars from Earth.

B.E.M.M.S. - Beyond Earth Mars Mission Support by SoftBEAM

Summary

Our game uses a text-based simulation platform in order to challenge the user. How does this challenge occur? The players have all the information about the space conditions and their goal is to give the best advice to the astronaut in order to contribute to their survival. The communication between Earth and Mars definitely faces some major problems. The game aims not only to inform the player about him, but also make them think of the best solution. The target group of our game is ages 12-14+.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We created a text-based platform which main purpose is to give the user a probable problem in space environment and make them choose the better option among others. By choosing the correct option or solution there will be some prizes for the player. On the other side by making the wrong decisions the effect on the astronaut's life will be equal. In order to summarize the whole idea, the player makes all the decisions in the game and through his actions he either proceeds or either finishes the game early by killing the astronaut! Through this game our team wants to give the player an idea about the difficulties of an astronaut in a space environment, educate him about space and of course giving him the opportunity to feel the responsibility that comes by with a space mission, in a space center.

How We Developed This Project

We as SoftBeam totally believe that travel to Mars is humanity's future in space. But we simoultaneously recognize the difficulties that occur in a space mission like this. The past has shown us that even in routine missions you can never be 100% sure of the outcome because space is a hard environment to challenge. Through our project we want to achieve just this : give the awareness to the people from a young age and make them familiar with the whole idea of space exploration through the interactive environment of our game. For the development of the project we used NetBeans IDE 8.0.2, Paint.net and Java 15.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We consulted the NASA protocol in case of space emergencies. In the future there will be an option to use NASA's data in order to include the real orbits of Earth and Mars.
