Data Discovery for Earth Science

Websites like the NASA Earth Observatory showcase the many uses of satellite data to highlight interesting natural events. International partner instruments on NASA satellites such as Japan’s ASTER instrument and Canada’s MOPITT instrument, both onboard the Terra satellite, are also included as part of the Observatory. This challenge will ask you to devise a tool or technique to guide users to relevant datasets to study specific events.

Summary

The goal of our project is to make Earth Science Data easily accessible for everyone. We created an Open Source search and visualization web application, providing information about publicly available databases from the main Space Agencies around the world. We provide an instant, relevant and typo tolerant search engine for Earth Science datasets. Make the research experience simple thanks to our intuitive solution.

How We Addressed This Challenge

How We Developed This Project

We wanted to choose a challenge in which we could provide a solution that would be useful for the research now, and could permit to everyone to discover and gather data easily. The main idea of our team was to develop a working proof of concept, that could be then improved as an open source project. The idea of all those challenge was to use the date, we aimed to make it even more accessible and easy to search.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We mainly used the Earth Data Collections from https://cmr.earthdata.nasa.gov/, which seems like a good starting point for us regarding the subect. We gathered this data using the API and also by scrapping some of it, we then created documents in Meilisearch with all this data in order to get a first version of our instant search. This data was very nice to start with different subjects and colletions, we then aim to improve it and to use a lot more different sources.
