A huge number of satellites in Earth's orbit support our day-to-day life on the ground. Our challenge was to develop a method to improve public knowledge of these satellites, with an eye towards driving user engagement, enthusiasm, and exploration. So we developed a progressive web application which shows users almost all the communication satellites around the globe using a 3D sphere object and allows users to select and get information of any satellite they want. It uses some resources (Libraries and APIs) provided by our organizers and we found and gives user a new experience of travelling through the 3D space among the satellites around the globe.
Even though most people know that there are communication satellites around the globe, they are not aware that they have access to the APIs that have information about those satellite to get to know more about them. Moreover most of them do not have the technical knowledge to access those data through an API. Therefore we decided to bring up those information to the community using a more user-friendly and mobile method, which anybody can access even through a simple application in their mobile phone.
We used React Native, Ionic Cross Platform, NodeJs and Firebase as the main tools to develop this application. TypeScript was used as the language. We used SSC RESTful API, which was provided by NASA Space Apps team, as a resource to obtain the data about the satellites.
When we started researching and developing this application it was real challenge for most of us since this is the first time we worked on something related space and satellites. Therefore we had to our research really well to gather information and resources. And also the legit and proper resources were not common as much as the other fields. So we had to refer every resource we could find and do our research well.
We used the SSC RESTful API to gather information about the communication satellites around the globe and created our own database using those information and used that to give the user a full experience about how the communication satellites work around the globe.
