The Challenge
Background:
Many people associate the space sector with only a few specific regions of the world, such as the “space coast” of Florida, USA, but the work of space exploration (and the societal benefits it brings) permeates every location and facet of society. Space exploration represents a network of government agencies, small businesses, research institutions, universities, large businesses, startups, and even garage innovators. These entities collectively make meaningful contributions to science and exploration missions.
Currently there is no consolidated source of information for space activities within a specific region. How can your solution engage the public by showcasing work taking place in their own communities? Can you help people gain an increased awareness of space activities in their area and potentially feel a more personal connection to the broader space community?
Your challenge is to provide a visual representation of the breadth of the space sector's influence, showing where work relating to space exploration is being done in specific communities. The solution may showcase organizations, such as small and large businesses, universities, and research institutions, that are contributing to space exploration in specific local communities. The solution could also highlight the local history of space exploration within a region and illustrate the societal benefits of technology development in a user's "backyard."
Potential Considerations:
- Your solution may show users where current and/or historical activities related to space are in an area. If you include historical activities, how can you include points of interest in your project?
- How can your solution become more of an educational tool? Consider providing links and information about the nature of the work and the groups and organizations performing it.
- Remember that the “space sector” also includes entities using space-borne platforms to do research about the Earth.
- In addition to the resources provided, consider searching space news sites for information on international partnerships, government activities, commercial activities in space exploration, and U.S. state-specific Space Grant Consortiums.
