We developed a space sector activity viewer. It is important because it provides users with numerous different space related organizations from different years and it promotes awareness about these organizations. Our main aim was to eradicate the mainstream fallacy that the space sector is only composed of a few specific research centers. We hope to achieve to show clients that space sector is an enormous area and it is not only consisted of a few institutions. It is vast sector to which a multitude of contributions have been made so far from a diversity of businesses, universities, startup and government affiliated establishments.
Before applying, we wanted to choose a challenge in which we can use a 3D earth model and manipulate the data easily. After considering what we were going to do, we decided to choose this challenge, Space Exploration In Our Backyard. We mainly used Unity and therefore C#. Throughout the development process we also used Python and Java for little works as well. We successfully managed to use the 3D earth model, adjust the camera movement with the mouse, place the location indicators, timeline bar and information box. We sorted the space agency data according to the years and states. We also wrote a piece of code to switch XY coordinates of any location on earth to the XYZ coordinates of our 3D environment. Throughout the development, we encountered with lots of bugs and tried to overcome them.
We used NASA Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) / Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Database excessively. We read the data and transferred it into little csv files sorting according to years and states. Then with each click, we made our program to read the necessary csv file and give the related information. This data provided approximately 16000 different organizations to us and it became a strong motivation for our project.
