Breakthrough

Faster-than-light travel is the key to humanity’s dreams of inter-galactic space travel. Your challenge is to create an app, tool, game, or other interactive application that showcases both existing, as well as next generation/theoretical, breakthrough spacecraft propulsion in an engaging way.

Propelling into the Future

Summary

After a lot of changes of ideas, we chose to make a code.org app. We started by writing about info of future and current propulsion systems. Our design features a web app. On this web app when you enter you see a starting screen. Once inside you will be able to see six different categories of propulsion systems. Each with a diagram or picture to show visually as well as descriptively of propulsion systems that could be used in the future, as well as being used now. We wrote the descriptions as if we are people of the future to interest children so they can understand how propulsion systems work. If needed, there is more scientific and detailed information when you click on learn more.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We developed a web app which can be used to teach people about different propulsion systems and theories of future possibilities with different types of the systems. The web app showcases information of 6 different types of propulsion systems with pictures and diagrams so people can visually understand how these systems work.

How We Developed This Project

Our team decided that we wanted to do this challenge because we all love coding and we want experience in making interactive websites and games. At first we decided that we may make a rocket picture where you can hover over parts and it will tell you info about those parts. We decided against it because we wanted to focus on propulsion systems and with that kind of model it would not be possible to talk as in depth about future propulsion systems as we do in our web app. We used java script in code.org to develop a good user interface. At first we attempted to create an app that did not accurately respond to the challenge. To get around this issue, we restarted and created a new app which was able to better fit the criteria of the challenge. Our achievement was that this was our first finished project as a team and gave us well needed experience.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We utilized NASA's websites to gain reliable and accurate information for the app, especially considering that the app is purely educational it is vital to ensure it isn't providing false information.
