Breakthrough

Faster-than-light travel is the key to humanity’s dreams of inter-galactic space travel. Your challenge is to create an app, tool, game, or other interactive application that showcases both existing, as well as next generation/theoretical, breakthrough spacecraft propulsion in an engaging way.

Summary

The problem we face is that advancements in our technology are relatively slow, due to the unique skill sets and interests of rocket propulsion scientists and researchers. Without a significant development in propulsion technology, exploration will be severely limited. One hinderance is the lack of understanding of today’s propulsion technologies or the exciting new possibilities of the future for upcoming generations. Our team created a program to teach and compare existing, new and theoretical methods of propulsion to help raise awareness about the importance of investing in new space propulsion techniques.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The team decided to create a program that showcases existing, new and theoretical methods of propulsion to help raise awareness about the importance of investing in new space propulsion techniques.

Our goals are to help teach:

  • Different methods of propulsion
  • The pros and cons of each type
  • Show new and theoretical propulsion technologies to get people excited
  • Distance and Time measures
How We Developed This Project

Initial brainstorming on day 0 lead us to craft and expand the idea. The team is made up of several skills sets that mesh well for the project we're creating. We started out with a research phase, had SME participation, brainstorming, ideating, pivoting and ultimately moving into prototyping our MVP.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Our team met with SMEs and gathered information from NASA that helped inform our research. We included research used in order to calculate distances, thrust and other factors. We also used the NASA Eyes website to help with visuals. We compiled our research and imagery into a functional MVP.
