Breakthrough

Faster-than-light travel is the key to humanity’s dreams of inter-galactic space travel. Your challenge is to create an app, tool, game, or other interactive application that showcases both existing, as well as next generation/theoretical, breakthrough spacecraft propulsion in an engaging way.

Breaking the Barrier

Summary

Our project uses a web app to calculate the time in years for travelling between Our project uses a web app to calculate the time in years for travelling between the Earth and various stars in the universe. The user can change the star destination as well as the propulsion technique. The main purpose of this project was to introduce and educate users about various current and future propulsion techniques. This will help people learn about different propulsion techniques as well as their accelerations and travel time. It will also demonstrate to users to sheer challenge and lengths of space travel.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We developed a web app that allows users to calculate various travel times and accelerations for travelling between the Earth and various other stars in the universe. It works by the user selecting a star and a propulsion technique and clicking calculate, which then displays the values for the time of travel and acceleration based on the star and propulsion technique. We hoped to achieve an easy to use web app that provides quick and interesting information for the user.

How We Developed This Project

We were inspired to choose this project because we thought the idea of the different propulsion techniques for future space travel really interested us. Our approach was to divide the work based on different people's expertise and combine all the work together at the end using Github. The tools and languages we used were Google Firebase for the backend and we used React for the front end.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used space agency data for the different stars and their respective distances from Earth as well as different propulsion techniques and their properties.
