Create a Mascot

The world is full of scientific information that can help us make informed decisions and take action. However, that information is not always accessible to young learners. Your challenge is to create a mascot that can help make learning about Earth and space science more fun and welcoming for younger audiences.

Hover Draw

Summary

Hover Draw simplifies the process of online teaching ,the need of the hour. It a python driven project using opencv and numpy modules , which uses the user's webcam, masks the user's hand and gets all the coordinates of the top most part of the hand (i.e ,the fingers). Then by accessing the coordinates, it plots them on the screen using the color chosen by user or by using the default color.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Develop:-

We have developed a python based application which uses user's webcam and fingers and allows them to draw and write on their screen.

Why is it important:-

Teachers teaching online ,find it very difficult to write and draw in order to explain ,due to the absence of classroom boards, especially while teaching subjects like mathematics and physics which are diagrammatically very challenging to explain. Drawing or explaining on virtual Paint type applications disturbs the students while having online classes.

What does it do:-

It captures your fingers position around the webcam and the draws corresponding points on the Screen.

How does it work:-

It uses the webcam of the user’s laptop and figures the hand by masking the hand.

After which it calculates the position of the user’s finger and draws corresponding points accordingly, on the screen.

What do we hope to achieve:-

We want teachers to comfortably express themselves while teaching online. They should feel like writing or drawing on the board as on their screens and that should make online teaching a good experience, using the Hover-Draw application.

How We Developed This Project

What inspired our team to choose this challenge:-

Education has been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic with 1.53 billion learners out of school, impacting 87.6% of the world’s total enrolled learners.

As a result, the system of imparting education has changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms.

What was our approach to developing this project:-

At first we researched about the challenges teachers teaching online were facing. We ourselves as students, face problems in understanding the concepts of Mathematics in our online classes. Therefore we thought of developing an application or rather an online blackboard . Thus with the help of opencv module ,we coded this application.

What tools, coding languages, hardware did we use to develop our project:-

We have used:

Vscode , Webcam ,User's Hand

Coding Language:- Python

Hardware:-Webcam

What problems and achievements did our team have:-

We had to go through opencv module very often .

We found this application very useful in drawing and teaching mathematics.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

It is a very good tool for explanatory purposes. Especially drawing on the screen ,gives it a 3D effect, very interesting for teaching space technology.
