The world is full of scientific information that can help us make informed decisions and take action. However, that information is not always accessible to young learners. Your challenge is to create a mascot that can help make learning about Earth and space science more fun and welcoming for younger audiences.

Project YES - Youth Educating Self (Rainbow Fairy and Magical Wings)

Summary

Youth created a fictional character and series of stories of a magical fairy who gives magical wings to kids, which can transform into space suits, and take them to explore the universe together. All data and reference information are from nasa.gov.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Motive - 動機

To have an original design of a mascot by youth and for youth to understand and learn about earth and space science.

要設計一個吉祥物來幫助小朋友了解和學習有關地球和太空的知識。


Background - 背景

Hello, I am Irene Chuang, 7 years old. My 5 years old sister Iris and I decided to join this year's NASA Hackathon. It began when I saw my dad's students talked about signing up NASA space apps challenge, I asked out of curiosity, and learned that it is similar to a competition 2 years ago which was to complete a design challenge over a weekend. I told my dad that I wanted to compete, instead joining with his students, my dad recommended me to create my own team and compete with others. It sounded so exciting!

我是莊子云,今年七歲,和我的5歲妹妹莊子心決定一起參加這次的NASA黑客松。當我看到爸爸的學生討論報名NASA黑客松時,我很好奇的問了一下。原來這跟2年前參加過的比賽很像,是要在一個週末完成一個設計挑戰。我就跟爸爸說我也想參加,結果爸爸就建議我做這個題目“創造吉祥物”,並幫我報名。



Result - 結果

Iris and I together created Rainbow Fairy and Magic Wings, who specialize in earth and space exploration. We also created our first story of the series: first boy to visit eight planets of solar system. We love Rainbow Fairy very much, and we believe all other kids will like Rainbow Fairy too.

我和妹妹一起創造了彩虹仙子和會變成太空服的神奇翅膀,並且做了第一個故事:帶小男孩去看八大行星。我們很喜歡彩虹仙子,我們相信其他小朋友也會很喜歡彩虹仙子。


Future Outlook - 未來展望

We hope to tell more Rainbow Fairy stories to other children and hope that they will learn many things about earth and space in our stories.

我們希望講更多彩虹仙子的故事給其他小朋友聽,希望他們在聽彩虹仙子的故事時能學到非常多有關地球和太空的知識。


Conclusion - 結論

This is the first time we design a character on our own, and it is also the first time we shared with the world. We hope everyone will like our story and hope we will continue to create more stories about NASA, human, earth and space stories and share with everyone.

這是我們第一次自己做設計,也是第一次跟大家說故事,希望大家會喜歡,也希望我們能跟全世界的小朋友說有關NASA、人類、地球、和宇宙的故事。

How We Developed This Project

Methodology - 方法/原理

From beginning my sister and I want to be the mascot who teaches kids about universe and earth, but we have decided that the mascot should know magic so she can do so much more. But then Mommy told us that a mascot is not anyone of us, but a fictional character we imagined, and every kids will like her. So we imagined that she is a fairy with magical power, with a big smile on her face, both boys and girls all like her.

從一開始我和妹妹都想當教小朋友有關宇宙和地球的吉祥物,但是我們覺得這個吉祥物要會魔法,這樣可以用魔法做很多事情。然後媽媽解釋吉祥物不是我們自己,而是我們想像出來的人物,是要讓每一個小朋友都喜歡的人物,所以我們想她是一個仙子,臉上笑咪咪的,不論是男生或女生都會喜歡她。

Because we love colors, all the colors, and there are so many different colors in the universe, as well as magic, so we decided to call her "the Rainbow Fairy". She has long brownish hair, and wears bright orange colored dress like the color of the sun, and a pair of magic wings on her back which can transform into space suit when in space. She carries a purple shoulder bag that can fit almost anything, especially her favorite telescope. She also can shoot out a beam from her eyes that can see through dense objects.

因為我們很喜歡所有的顏色,宇宙中有不同的顏色,魔法也有不同的顏色,所以我們決定我們的仙子叫做彩虹仙子。她有咖啡色長長的頭髮,穿著太陽般橘紅色的連衣裙,背後有一對能變成太空服的魔法翅膀,側背著一個放下所有東西的隨身包,裡面有可以放大縮小的望遠鏡。她的眼睛還可以發出一種光,可以看到東西的裡面。

Rainbow Fairy loves to fly all over the world, and if any kid has questions about the earth or space, she will fly down and invite the kid to go look for answer with her. She will give the kid a pair of magic wings, which will become a protective suit when in space or other dangerous environment.

彩虹仙子喜歡在全世界飛來飛去,如果小朋友有太空或地球的問題,她就會帶小朋友去找答案。她會給小朋友一對魔法翅膀,去太空時會變成神奇的太空服保護小朋友。

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used data and photos from NASA as reference to ensure accuracy of our knowledge.
