Create a Mascot

The world is full of scientific information that can help us make informed decisions and take action. However, that information is not always accessible to young learners. Your challenge is to create a mascot that can help make learning about Earth and space science more fun and welcoming for younger audiences.

The Planetic

Summary

Our project aim is to make the information about earth and space science accessible and likeable, as it’s an interactive website that is led by our mascots which are four planets with different colors and accessories to reflect their inspiring personality. They are responsible for explaining different concepts interactively for three levels: beginners, intermediate and advanced. Their way of explanation differs according to the levels “which are divided based on age” to suit more needs and ages. The concepts covered by the website are the solar system in a detailed way, atmospheric composition, overview about the universe, Earth’s interior and observing the sky at night.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We developed our project to be an interactive enjoyable website that contains information about the solar system, sky observing at night and our home “The Earth” concerning its atmospheric and interior compositions. We were inspired with this idea because many people -whether kids or adults- which have interest in learning more about space find it difficult to understand the scientific information from the advanced sites and books or even difficult to get access to it. So, we made this website with a simple interface which is easy to interact with. In addition to that, this website available for all ages starting from grade one and all the information in it is from reliable sites and books but it’s simplified to be easily understood by all readers. We divided the information into 3 levels (beginners, intermediate, and advanced) so information is more organized and easier to reach. A mascot was designed and it’s a unique sign for our project. This mascot will be like a teacher who funnily illustrates the concepts to the learning won’t be boring. We provided the beginners level with some comics using our mascot while the intermediate and the advanced levels were provided with other visuals clarifications like images from space agencies so the information is explained clearly. We did our best to make this website useful as much as possible and we hope this website will be accessible for all people to increase their love and passion to earth and space science and then we can develop it more to make everyone involved in many great sciences related to astronomy!

How We Developed This Project

We chose this challenge as we found it very inspiring to help people reach different information related to earth and space science easily and also to find them explained in a funny and informative way. We decided to help all people with different ages and different knowledge levels so we classified our topics in three levels: beginners, intermediates and advanced. We also decided to create a family of mascots to be responsible for explaining the topics at all levels. We worked in all the lines together, our researchers started collecting information, our web-developers started searching for the tools to make the website and the designer started searching for the mascot’s designing information.

The researchers collected information from Nasa’s reliable data. They found it slightly difficult to simplify the information and cover each concept into three levels, but they could overcome this problem by understanding and wrote a summary of each concept. Data were presented in three ways the first for the beginners with the basics and simple information, the second for the intermediates with a great part of the information presented in simple moderated concepts, and the whole information including the hard concepts for the advanced.

Our web developers were confused about which language or site will help us in our project until they chose Google Sites to make our website. This was their first time using google sites so they learn using it from scratch. They made a plan of the outlines to avoid forgetting any point. They started by adding all the webpages and linking them together, separating the levels, adding the places of photos and text and all the different essentials for building the website.

The graphic designer searched for the colors and the shapes to make the Mascot and we decided that it will be a family of four planets with different characters and interests. Our Mascot is in a form of an alive planet with communicating body parts as our first aim is explaining astronomical topics, the colors of the kids are so simple to avoid distracting them but are also from the kids and teenagers’ preferable colors as white, rose, light blue and blue. The colors of the parents are related to their kids as they are family, to make it more real we add common colors as the eye colors between mom and daughter and many other details. To bring all of these ideas to life, we used Photoshop CC for drawing the body parts and accessories of each character but we faced a problem that it can’t save them continuously so we used GIMP 2.1 for forming the images of the website and the rest of the designs. To animate our characters, we used Cartoon Animator 4, we cared about adding attractive visualities in the beginners’ level as interacting videos of the animated Mascots and comics to help them understand the information in funny interesting ways.

The difficulties that face each one of lead us to achieve our project at the end, and all of us have learned new skills and this is a big achievement for us

We gathered all our work together and presented it in the website, more details were added as the personality traits of each character in the family in the "Meet The Planetics "part in our home page, it will attract attention and break the ice of the new young users, it also adds more life for the characters in an imaginary funny way.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

During the process of making our project, NASA was our main resource for most of the information as NASA is one of the best space agencies and always provides us with accurate reliable information. So, we used 3D photos, videos and audios which NASA share on its websites, they helped us a lot as they make the information clearer and the reader feels like he is in a journey to space. Also, the image gallery website of the Canadian space agency helped us a lot. However, Nasa’s websites weren’t used for getting means of simplifying information like the photos only as we used Nasa’s websites like NASA Solar System Exploration and NASA Science Space Place to get information. They were our major references that we depend on to get information.
