Create a Mascot

The world is full of scientific information that can help us make informed decisions and take action. However, that information is not always accessible to young learners. Your challenge is to create a mascot that can help make learning about Earth and space science more fun and welcoming for younger audiences.

Gibby – The Space Friend

Summary

A smart, cute, reliable, fun and inspiring mascot for kids to learn about space and Earth that works as a virtual assistant.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our goal is to provide reliable scientific information for children and young people between 5 and 16 years old. For this, we developed Gibby, a mascot with the ability to process the large amount of information obtained by NASA about space and planet Earth.

Gibby is able to inform in a fun and reliable way, clarifying doubts about space, planets and events experienced by the Earth that can be observed from space (eg global warming, fires, hurricanes, etc.). This ability of his is only possible because it was developed by humans with artificial intelligence technology and machine learning, which makes him able to interact in a personalized way with each child, understanding his specific curiosities and awakening others, according to the range age. Its main features are:

  • Inspiring - kids get inspired want to have his intelligence
  • Intelligent - processes a lot of data and knows a lot of things
  • Fun - he likes to interact with children
  • Reliable - issues opinions according to scientific understanding
  • Adorable - because her cute appearance can win the hearts of children.
How We Developed This Project

Our mascot was developed from a rocket design by the team member Helena Nobre. From then on, member Sofia Nobre recalled the adorable shape of the Dragon capsule she had seen on the launch live for the Space X project that took NASA astronauts into space.

Just as the Dragon capsule came and went from space, Gibby will also be able to pass on information to its users from those who have been in space, facilitating scientific understanding of information obtained in the past and in the present that will be important to consider in the future. The enlarged view of the Earth, obtained only by those who have been up there, is essential for us to predict a better future for the planet.

Initially, Gibby was drawn by hand from the observed characteristics of photos of the Dragon capsule obtained on the internet. The capsule's windows have turned into charming eyes and the shape of the mascot's body also refers to the triangular shape of the capsule.

Once the drawing was formatted, we developed its digitization in “ProCreate” using and iPad, and thus added accessories such as the NASA symbol and also a cover, which demonstrates his ability to become a hero of scientific information!

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used images from Nasa Image and video resources for inspiration. But we expect to use this data as resource for our mascot once it can be used as a virtual assistant.
