Super NASA Stars| Create a Mascot

Create a Mascot

The world is full of scientific information that can help us make informed decisions and take action. However, that information is not always accessible to young learners. Your challenge is to create a mascot that can help make learning about Earth and space science more fun and welcoming for younger audiences.

Rocky the Spaceship

Summary

Our mascot is Rocky the Spaceship. The mascot is drawn as a cartoon and has face and arms. Rocky is a fictional spaceship that travels around the Solar System meeting every day new friends and exploring the universe. Rocky is the main character of a cartoon which explains episode by episode a part of the Solar System.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Rocky the Spaceship is a cartoon designed to attract younger people to NASA and space travel. The cartoon airs on TV in the evening and its audience is kids aged between 5 and 13. Rocky is a friendly spaceship that takes the audience around the Solar System and learns with them many new things. He has many friends that help him throughout the journey including Mrs. Jame who gives directions from the Earth. Rocky sends Mrs. Jame many information about space which she collects and shares with scientists to improve the understanding of the universe.

Rocky is not only a cartoon but will also become partner in schools to boost students’ learning experience.

By watching this cartoon children will learn many scientific concepts in a fun and stimulating way.

How We Developed This Project

Since one of the members of our team is a middle school student, we felt that the challenge should be accessible to him. After a first brainstorming, we started jotting down ideas and using Power Point to create slides. A piece of paper and a pencil were used to create the first sketch of our mascot, and later the drawing was digitalized.

The first problem we encountered was working remotely. Not being able to physically work together posed a challenge that we solved using video meetings. Furthermore the age difference among the teammates initially seemed a problem, but was actually a pro for us because of the different approaches to the challenge.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

In each episode of Rocky the Spaceship, when Rocky lands on a planet, asteroid, satellite, etc., there will be real video clips from images.NASA.gov that the children can watch with a commentary from Mrs. Jame. Furthermore, videos will even be used as settings for each episode. In the cartoon children will see Rocky moving on a real background.
