Create a Mascot

The world is full of scientific information that can help us make informed decisions and take action. However, that information is not always accessible to young learners. Your challenge is to create a mascot that can help make learning about Earth and space science more fun and welcoming for younger audiences.

Surveyor 2: The origins of Survey

Summary

The subject that triggers this report is acknowledged in a newspaper article in an Argentinean newspaper about the detection of object 2020 SO by NASA. The article mentioned the scientific debate of what this object is, presenting two theories: A small asteroid of low speed or an artificial object, the latter is believed to be the Surveyor 2 Centaur rocket. The theory of the artificial object led us to deepen the investigation based on the protagonist of the mission, Surveyor 2. Due to its history and the particularities of his case, it was chosen as our mascot. Therefore, the mascot works as a mediator between young public and general knowledge of astronomy, astronautics and astrophysics.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Basically, we developed a friendly robot cartoon which is intended to transmit a generally complex scientific knowledge (such as the concept of gravity, planets, constellations, among others) to the young public in a simple and didactic way. We think this chore needs to be done nowadays in order to raise awareness and interest in children.

Throughout its background story, it may teach some moral values as regards the feeling of belonging and introspective thinking (as eventually the lost mascot will form its own identity). Moreover, as it gets to know its environment and surroundings, it may become capable of teaching the public about some concepts (like the previously mentioned), through a series of clips.

How We Developed This Project

We found our source of inspiration in our passion for transmitting vital information for our future due to the constant developments in technology. A couple of days ago we came across an article in an Argentinian newspaper about the founding of object 2020 SO by NASA. Paul Chodas, from JPL, theorized that this object is actually the Centaur part of the rocket which launched Surveyor 2.

The project was developed with Adobe PhotoShop, Sony Vegas Pro, Reaper, Autodesk SketchBook, Google Drive and Discord. We had some technical difficulties with the sound in one of our computers, but we could figure it out. However, we believe that one of our biggest achievements was that all of us could unify our skills and interests for a common purpose.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used information and images from the NASA and JPL database, as an inspiration for both designing the creature and starting and developing the project.

We found information about object 2020 SO in the JPL in order to deepen our understanding of the matter.
