Create a Mascot

The world is full of scientific information that can help us make informed decisions and take action. However, that information is not always accessible to young learners. Your challenge is to create a mascot that can help make learning about Earth and space science more fun and welcoming for younger audiences.

Targy

Summary

Targy is a mascot who is a guide and connection between NASA experts and the general public, to make scientific information more accessible and easier to understand. Collaborating with NASA and different technologies and basing its pedagogy on multiple intelligences, it will manage to impact people from all over the world and establish bonds of trust to impart values and knowledge in different topics, such as the Objectives of sustainable development, topics of astrophysics, science and technology, among other topics that will be based on the databases provided by NASA. In addition, the project takes advantage of social networks and media to reach more people.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We made the design of a pet inspired by the tardigrade, one of the most resistant living, because it has a dried state, it resists the absolute vacuum and pressures five times more intense than the deepest ocean, in addition in that state it produces great amounts of antioxidants that neutralize the space radiation.

Firstly we made sketches after that, two digital designs in 2D, first one in normal state and another in desired state, we implemented one of the designs in a filter for social networks. In addition to 3D modeling of the design in normal state. We also developed an application with virtual reality and with artificial intelligence to have a first interaction with the mascot. This application works when you focus the phone camera and it detects a surface and Targy appears. The next phases of the project are planned;

  • It is planned that by means of artificial intelligence the user can interact by exchanging messages and starting conversations by means of voice command.
  • Use the databases provided by NASA to develop the popular science articles and topics that Targy will teach.
  • It is customizable so that you can achieve a higher impact by making your users feel identified.
  • Animation of the character with informative videos with personalized dialogues.
  • Promoting learning through multiple intelligences.
  • This is important because Targy is designed to generate an environment of empathy, as well as to attract young audiences ( 6- 30 years old ), and together with the technological tools make scientific information an interesting activity. Targy works as an intermediary between experts and the general public, making information more accessible. Targy creates an informed society and knowledgeable, Targy is the perfect solution to be the guide, teacher and friend that inspires and communicates values and missions. We hope to reach many people from all over the world, and Targy will be a point of reference and identification of NASA, it will impact in different areas at the same time.

How We Developed This Project

The creativity and skills of each team member were fundamental to choose the challenge, considering that the strengths of the team are creativity and technology, this was the challenge most attracted for us. Our focus is to create a friendly design with the public and also that people interact with the mascot, in order to identify targy as the mascot of the NASA. The tools and softwares used were sketchbook and photoshop to elaborate 2D designs, blender where we created the 3D design, spark.AR where we created a filter directed to social networks, Unity and vuforia to detect planes and visualize in augmented reality the models created. Some of the problems that we had were of hardware since several programs require specifications of high range to work fluently, also we had problems of software by problems of versions and compatibility: Some of the profits were to learn new technologies, methods of work in equipment and at distance.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We use Sapace app logos to add NASA logos to the designs, it is planned to have a mascot and to be an NASA image, also will be used to share information and research.
