For bigger spacecraft capable of executing bigger missions, some of the assembly may be done in space. Your challenge is to design a simple approach that enables components to be assembled in space.

Summary

The project is aimed at assembling large rockets in space. The goal is to facilitate docking and alignment of the various rocket modules in space.

How I Addressed This Challenge

According to this project, I found it is very hard to detail every process in this scenario, because it is more close to a concept design, it full of interesting, we have never see this happend in the space.

But the teacher in group offten told us what we should focus, so it become more and more precisely in this research. it is a really a industry application, although it has not happed, but it will happed in near future.

I check some industry work bench and assembly factory, and find the car assemble line is very similar to our project, although car is assembled on ground, but the scenario of car one by one is very close to my imagination, and I explore the case, now it become the solution of my project,

the main point is the align problem in space, so I find the solution for this work.

How I Developed This Project

I choose this topic is it hide a very interesting industy application in it, it seems like a concepte design, but it need the experience of industry and some analysis capbility, so , I found many material to seek the solution. it is a interestring experience that give me many inspiration . I like this kind of analysis process.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Due to the special of this project, I have not found some data that could be used on this area.

Overlord--space orbit assemble plant

The idea of the project solution comes from the Hyundai Automotive Robot Assembly Line, I read the technology from automobile industry and NASA reference.the main framework is as below:



  1. Design such an assembly platform in space, with robot arms on both sides
  2. Each robot has a camera for assemble installation,
  3. The platform have sunside with solar panell, and the other side install with rail and tool space. 
  4. The manipulator and platform can act as a launch pad, making the platform a space relay launch platform,
  5. The platform adjust the position from signals from four GPS satellites to ensure the position of each rocket segment,
  6. At the same time, the attitude of the rocket is controlled by the inertial navigation inside each rocket to ensure the alignment during assemble, 
  7. So, platform finish the assemble according to the signal of GPS and inertail navigation of rockets
  8. The connection inteface of each rocket is designed with a mechanical lock and an electronic lock to ensure the safety, and the button is used to release them.
