Let's Connect

For bigger spacecraft capable of executing bigger missions, some of the assembly may be done in space. Your challenge is to design a simple approach that enables components to be assembled in space.

The Future Coupler

Summary

Our project is about dividing a satellite in 2 parts. One of the bigger part will be built on space and the second part will be built on Earth. The problem we found was: How we can connect these two parts if we don't know the exact position of the satellite? We started thinking about it and we come up to the conclusion of using an electromagnets, so the first part of the satellite will be already in orbit when the second part will be launched. After the launching, the second part will have to get closer to the first. In the first part we will use a "Hall Sensor" to detect where is the second part and with it we will be able to control the satellite using pressurized oxygen propellan

How We Addressed This Challenge

We developed a way to connect structures in space using electromagnets and thrusters, it will be very important to build and repair space structures, we simply use thrusters, hall sensors and electromagnets to get more precision when connecting parts of a structure in space. We think get the expansion of the spacial bases.

How We Developed This Project

why we didn't want a relationship with software and we wanted something more related to "space".We have thinked in a lock system, but we didn't have how get closer and line up to the other part of the satellite,so we think in use electromagnets. We use an electromagnetic force calculator to check the feasibility of the project.we had difficulties in thinking about some way to make our project possible but in return we got knowledge.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used the supporting texts and videos to help us have the basis of our project, which was a locking mechanism.
