Putting the 'Art' in Artemis

Your challenge is to create an artistic work to communicate, inform, or inspire others about humanity's road to Mars. Your art may be in any form, including (but not limited to): drawing, painting, sculpture, computer generated 2D or 3D, music, film, music video, written or spoken word, dance, and textile.

LuMa - A Journey to Mars

Summary

In our project, we created a game where you must complete tasks by answering questions about space and fixing your rocket as you go to the moon. Once you have completed these tasks, you are able to go to the moon and walk on the surface. Then, you complete more tasks there until you are able to go to Mars. This game is made to inspire and inform the future generations about the Artemis challenge and getting to Mars so that they will be interested and make new discoveries about Mars and maybe even colonize it!

How We Addressed This Challenge

We developed LuMa, a game where people are sent to Mars to complete tasks. In LuMa, we used our artistic work through designing the functions, characters, spaceship, and virtually everything as it was created by Scratch. It successfully inspires and informs others about humanity's road to Mars and we hope that through our game, more people are encouraged to learn more about space. Maybe they could be the one to find the next big discovery!

How We Developed This Project

Our team was inspired to choose this challenge because we were all great artists and designers. However we wanted to challenge ourselves and apply our artworks into a game. Some platforms we used to design features, characters, and others were through Medibang, Ibispaint, digital whiteboard, and others. We also used Scratch to code our project game. Our project was a challenge as we tried to create a game from all the great designs and ideas given the limited coding experience in our group. However, in order to contribute to conversations, tutorials on basic coding skills allowed us to finish the project together. Moreover, we had members from all over the world, so time zone was an issue. However we had tasks and shifts to know what each person needed to get done. All in all, despite all the problems, we were able to create a successful game that address the challenge.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used Space Agency data to determine what challenges the player would face and how they would be able to fix problems with the rocket while in space. We also used NASA imagery to represent some of the areas of the rocket and to show some planets. We were inspired by the recent launch to Mars of the rover Perseverance. We also received inspiration from the regular newsletter NASA Express.
