Putting the 'Art' in Artemis

Your challenge is to create an artistic work to communicate, inform, or inspire others about humanity's road to Mars. Your art may be in any form, including (but not limited to): drawing, painting, sculpture, computer generated 2D or 3D, music, film, music video, written or spoken word, dance, and textile.

Mars is born again

Summary

Traveling to the Mars will involve many challenges and many people are trying to address them by various projects and programs and Artemis program is among them, which prepares us for First Human Mission to Mars. Our project is a concept_art poster, which shows humanity's road to Mars by using art. Our poster also offers a great solution for the irrespirable air of Mars. We can use various types of microorganisms such as Cyanobacteria to change the atmosphere of Mars and make it breathable for ourselves. By looking at our poster, everyone can get a general idea of Artemis program and its goals, one of the top problems to human during Mars missions and a solution for this problem.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Human's missions to Mars will not be easy for sure. We need some accurate plans to achieve this goal. Artemis program is among them, which would be very useful and prepares us for First Human Mission to Mars.

One of the top problems to human during Mars missions is irrespirable air of the red planet. The Mars Curiosity rover determined the atmosphere is 95.9% carbon dioxide, with traces of other gases such as argon, nitrogen, oxygen and carbon monoxide. We can do the same thing that our earth did during the evolution of its atmosphere:using microorganisms which produce the gases we need (including oxygen) by using the gases in the Martian atmosphere.

Cyanobacteria are among photosynthetic microorganisms that can use carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. They can also feed other microorganisms, produce biofuels and support plant growth by Nitrogen fixation. So we need some bacterial platforms to make its atmosphere breathable for ourselves. Artemis program is a great opportunity to test these microorganisms.

The project

We made a concept_art poster, which clearly shows humanity's road to Mars. By looking at our poster, everyone can get a general idea of Artemis program and its goals, one of the top problems to human during Mars missions (irrespirable air) and a solution for this problem.

For more details about poster: In the center of image, there is an astronaut who is walking on Mars (The orange color represents Mars). In the Mars' sky, Earth is behind the Moon, which represents Artemis program ( NASA will return people to the moon by 2024 and lunar exploration will support successful human exploration of Mars in the future). There is a bacteria on the back of the astronaut costume, which shows we will be able to live on Mars using microorganisms. Two celestial bodies in the sky could also represent the two moons of Mars.

As a result, an attractive and artistic poster can encourage everyone to know more about Artemis and Mars.

How We Developed This Project

We are a group of high school students and traveling to other planets has always been attractive for us. We used NASA open data to notice that most of Mars' atmosphere is made up of carbon dioxide. So We asked ourselves this question: Why not use the microorganisms that provide most of the Earth's oxygen to change the Martian atmosphere? Then we decided to make a concept poster to share the information we learned about the humanity's road to Mars with others.

We used photoshop 2018 software to make our poster.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We read some articles from NASA to learn more about Artemis and the human journey to Mars so we can share this information with a work of art.

We also used NASA images sources to make poster and show humanity's road to Mars.
