Putting the 'Art' in Artemis

Your challenge is to create an artistic work to communicate, inform, or inspire others about humanity's road to Mars. Your art may be in any form, including (but not limited to): drawing, painting, sculpture, computer generated 2D or 3D, music, film, music video, written or spoken word, dance, and textile.

S.M.Art - Space and Mars merged into Arts

Summary

We, team Random from Bangladesh, divided our project into 3 segments. Firstly, we created a Deep Learning based Neural Style Transfer App using NASA open image data source to generate a filter giving an artistic astronomical vibe on the user-provided image. Then, we created a short animated video and a 3D Virtual Reality experience for showcasing interesting historic mission findings on Mars surface as another part of our Challenge. Finally, as a form of 3D Art Modelling, we created a 3d solar system in Unity to provide a flexible, dynamic user experience. We believe these various features in our project will attract space enthusiasts, especially kids through forms of art in an educative way

How We Addressed This Challenge

We have developed a project to expedite the ever-increasing curiosity of people about our solar system, the nature of space and its surroundings. With a view to achieving this target, we have come up with the exhibition of our project under the "Putting the Art in Artemis" challenge from the category "Create". Each segment of the project serves a different purpose than the others.

Since the very beginning, people have wondered about space gazing at the starry sky overhead. With the advancement of technology, scientists have achieved it up to a great extent. Nonetheless, curiosity of people have only increased over time. It is the dream of everyone to see for themselves what is actually out there and they can visualize exactly that through our project. We want to engage people, especially youngsters with recent discoveries, challenges of space mission and virtual exploration in an artistic, creative and hands on manner. We hope that our project will trigger the adventurous minds to spread their wings into the vast and explore the outer world.

How We Developed This Project

Inspiration and Approach:

Our motivation was to engage enthusiast people, specially young learners and kids with Space and Mars missions, exploration history and interesting findings through an artistic and educative way.

We chose Deep Learning algorithms, VR technologies and 3D Modelling techniques to combine a bunch of mini projects at one place to approach our solution. WE ARE GONNA LIVE THE ART!!!

Technologies used:

1) Machine learning Algorithms

2) Deep learning

3) Virtual reality

4) 3D modeling

5) Computer aided animation

Softwares used:

1) Unity3d

2) Blender

3) PyCharm

4) MS PowerPoint

Platform used:

1) Google Colab

Coding languages:

1) Python

2) JavaFX

3) C#

Challenges while coding:

1) It was hard to deploy the machine learning app into a backend because this app uses real time deep learning manipulation

2) Some 3D models from Nasa's site was not merged into complete one.

3) We had challenges how to incorporate 3d modeling in an artistic way

Achievements:

1) We deployed the project on google cloud platform that provided us cloud GPU support

2) We used blender to merge the separate parts of models and turn them into a complete model

3) Used our own imagination of how we want to see the mars and space in future

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Our project is segmented in different parts serving different purpose and we have used various resources provided by NASA in all segments.

  • For creating the 3d model of our solar system, we have implemented textures from NASA’s website. It is applied to build the surface of the solar model.
  •  For blending regular image with an artistic space-filter mask, we have used celestial images from NASA’s image gallery to give it an appealing look.
  • For exploration on MARS, we integrated 3d models of rovers as well as audio files from NASA into our VR model to make it more realistic and stimulating for the user.
