What Is Our Carbon Footprint?

Your challenge is to identify local sources of carbon emissions and/or estimate amounts of carbon emissions for different human activities to aid scientists in mapping carbon sources and sinks. How can you inform decisions to adapt to the consequences of a changing world and aid policy makers in making plans for the future?

Your footprint matters

Summary

Your footprint matters is Web page that informs people about the carbon footprint of certain events and helps them calculate theirs. The project also informs to local authorities through social networks about emission sources that can be threat to the climate of our planet

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our team developed a Web page that allows users to calculate the carbon footprint not only of them but also of some emission sources. Our calculator works with some information that the user enters about his/her daily activities . Then, the carbon footprint is calculated and the user has the option of share his/her result in social networks. In case of events that emit carbon dioxide, the page calculates its carbon footprint and informs its result to the appropriate authorities looking for some actions to remedy it. The group expects that the given solution can make people understand that taking care of our planet is the most important.

How We Developed This Project

What inspired us?

The current situation with COVID-19 has quarantined and isolated people from dozens of countries around de world. During this time it has been shown that the decreasing in human activity has reduced the pollution in the air, and has let us know what is the impact of our daily activities in the planet. This global insight inspired us to work in an idea that could change the way people see the pollution as something normal and that can`t be harmful to something that has to do with every one and need to be change immediately.

What was our approach to developing this project?

Our approach was to create a software, a web site in particular, that let any person measure his or her carbon footprint showing the equivalent in damage of the result in something that can matter to him or her and comparing to the average of his country or city. Additionally the application could show a timeline of the amount of CO2 in the country, which industrial activities are major responsible of those levels, and inform authorities about the emissions sources through social network.

What tools, coding languages, hardware, software did we use to develop our project?

We used Html, CSS and JS to create the demo but we need to mention R and Python will be as the languages we should use for a more deeply statistic computing.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Nasa data influenced us creating a need for sharing these information to any kind of person in a manner that can be catchy and easy to understand .
