Global Finalist

What Is Our Carbon Footprint?

Your challenge is to identify local sources of carbon emissions and/or estimate amounts of carbon emissions for different human activities to aid scientists in mapping carbon sources and sinks. How can you inform decisions to adapt to the consequences of a changing world and aid policy makers in making plans for the future?

BIGFOOT - Leave your mark, not your footprint

Summary

Bigfoot is an innovative app that allows everyone to be aware of its own contribute to pollution day by day. All of this is possible thanks to an accurate storage of data made by companies, an intuitive interface and captivating features that keeps users informed and entertained at the same time.

How We Addressed This Challenge

GOALS AND STRONG POINTS:

We want to create a simple app with the aim of sensitizing people about the carbon footprint topic. Everybody would be able to know exactly its daily footprint thanks to the constant update of data collected by the system. Bigfoot tracks down your purchases and your travels, collaborates with companies and keeps you informed on global scale events related to carbon footprint with the precious NASA's dataset. Bigfoot is fun, intuitive, practical and provides captivating features in order to entertain and sensitize at the same time. Our hope is to shape a world where carbon footprint is a primary topic to deal with in ordinary life.

FUNCTIONING AND FEATURES:

Using geolocalization and Bluetooth connection to the vehicle, our app can store any information about your travels, recording consumption. Bigfoot can also detect your speed, notify you in order to figure out which kind of transportation you're using. Basing on your quick answer, our app calculates the consumption. Either you buy something or move somewhere, you are aware of the amount of CO2 you're producing and more motivated to contribute to the reduction of it.

Businesses play a fundamental role; our app takes advantage of the data collected by companies about every product and store them into the app's dataset. The database is made with already existing information, in fact businesses have to detect all the carbon emissions to not exceed limitations. Bigfoot can connect with cash register (e.g. at the supermarket you can transfer your purchase on the app) to take note of every product you have bought and their carbon footprint. Bigfoot automatically creates a legend that compares different brands and shows you the less impacting product with the aim of making the consumer more aware about its habits' sustainability. Users can also scan with his camera phone the bar code of any product to discover every single information regarding the impact of the product on the environment.

Bigfoot knows your online purchases and creates a "carbon invoice" that takes note of every product you buy online. This feature can be exploited for airplane or train tickets and online shopping in general. Through ICAO's calculator, our app estimates the impact of the airplane travel and "brings you the bill" of the carbon footprint.

Bigfoot keeps you informed about the world situation; connecting to NASA's database, it shows you the carbon footprint of natural events like wildfires or artificial catastrophes.

Our app quantifies your footprint through an intuitive and impactful visualization of the number of trees that should be planted to mitigate the effect. Every user can also see a live summary of his carbon footprint with a "virtual foot size" and compare it with other users' footprint.

Bigfoot also provides features to captivate the attention of consumers and entertain them at the same time, such as global rankings, virtual rewards and challenges with other users. Consumers can also gather in teams in order to see their impact as a group. This feature could be useful for families, friends on vacation or colleagues that want to separate their single impact from the group.

How We Developed This Project

We chose this challenge mainly because of the relevance this topic has gained in the last years. We wanted to develop something captivating and fun in order to address as many people as possible and at the same time sensitize them. The main problem we bumped into was finding a way to make our app as usable as possible. We didn't want to create an intricate system that requires an intensive manual interaction with users, in order to make Bigfoot more attractive and motivating. To achieve this goal we introduced a feature that allows our app to connect with cash registers and access to online purchases, avoiding manual registration.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

From the dense amount of data provided by NASA we managed to extrapolate precious information about the main sources of CO2 emissions on the planet. Bigfoot rests on this collection of data and provides features in order to sensitize users. Thanks to EPA's calculator we could estimate with good precision the carbon footprint of a single household, changing the parameters and the different kinds of energy sources used in different parts of the world. Using ICAO's calculator we were able to find out the carbon footprint of airplane travelers and implement it into the app. NASA's dataset helped us mapping wildfires and global scale changes that we put into our app with the aim of keeping users informed.
