What Is Our Carbon Footprint?

Your challenge is to identify local sources of carbon emissions and/or estimate amounts of carbon emissions for different human activities to aid scientists in mapping carbon sources and sinks. How can you inform decisions to adapt to the consequences of a changing world and aid policy makers in making plans for the future?

CARBON FOOTPRINTING

Summary

Carbon footprinting aims to create an educational website to create awareness about the impact of greenhouse gases, the significance of carbon footprint, and why we should care about it. We are also attempting to use machine learning to create a better understanding of the footprints of humans on Earth and its surrounding ecosystem. The datasets provide us with the values of the atmospheric gases which help us to calculate the greenhouse gases which ultimately help us to infer how clean our air is and how urgently we need to take action. We plan to predict the pollution levels of a specific city which helps in bringing awareness to people about the kind of situation they are in.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Carbon footprinting aims to create an educational website to create awareness about the impact of greenhouse gases. We plan to predict the pollution levels of a specific city which helps in bringing awareness to people about the kind of situation they are in.

How We Developed This Project

Inspiration: Since the late 1990s, the term carbon footprint has become widely used in the public debate on personal and corporate responsibility in response to global climate change. But despite its frequent popular use, there is no clear scientific definition of the term, and there remains confusion as to what it actually means and measures.

We selected this challenge to create awareness amongst the public, to inform them about Carbon Footprint and its impact.

Approach: To create an educational website and raise awareness about the impact of Carbon footprint. We plan to predict the pollution levels of a specific city which helps in bringing awareness to people about the kind of situation they are in.

Tools, Software and Coding Languages used:

  1. Nodejs
  2. Tensorflow.js
  3. Electron
  4. Native JavaScript
  5. HTML5
  6. Python
  7. TensorFlow
  8. CSS - Bootstrap
  9. godaddy domain

Achievement: Created a website to create awareness about Carbon footprint using HTML, CSS, Javascript, Bootstrap.

Native Javascript is used to create an interactive map which lets people search for an address. Then all the places around the world with the same name would be displayed and the user would have to choose from them. Once the place is selected, that place is pointed out in the map with a marker. A label is attached to the marker which shows the latitude and longitude of that place. This was used to get latitude and longitude values of an address which would be then be used to assess the carbon monoxide levels in that place.

This could be further integrated with a Machine Learning Model which would predict the Carbon Monoxide levels in a specific area. The output values i.e latitude and longitude values of this model would be then sent to the machine learning model as an input.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

MOPITT Dataset was used to calculate CO levels across the globe to mark regions with the greatest and the least Carbon Pollution.
