What Is Our Carbon Footprint?

Your challenge is to identify local sources of carbon emissions and/or estimate amounts of carbon emissions for different human activities to aid scientists in mapping carbon sources and sinks. How can you inform decisions to adapt to the consequences of a changing world and aid policy makers in making plans for the future?

Details make difference

Summary

We created a calculator of individual carbon emission – the emissions that individuals can actually do something about. Application also saves the results, creates the database about rather ignored sources of CO2 to fill the gaps in statistic indicators. The social aim is to raise awareness. The project plan contains giving the user information about how their emission differs from optimal level and suggest suitable actions. Seeing general reports doesn’t make people feel responsible, but seeing individual impact on atmosphere may make them think. We believe that individuals can change the world for better and Starting with little details we can make big changes

How We Addressed This Challenge

We created an emission calculator for individuals. Considering that all the projects are about major sources of carbon emission, this web-application will help scientists to track carbon emission per a person as it saves the results and creates the database. It will fill the gaps in emission reports.

The most important thing in this project is raising awareness of carbon emission. We hope to awaken responsibility in every individual.

In case of certain location and, hopefully, the interest of the government, we plan add function of local area analyzer to find relative carbon emission and to help those in charge to find a place for reforestation - The place where everyone can grow a tree. And that’s when government takes the action. It can help in various ways starting with announcing tree planting season, making saplings free and ending with indicating where to plant them in order to make a park around the trees after years. That way everyone gets a benefit. Or the authorities can simply realize reforestation projects.

In any case, we hope for the better air that we breathe everyday

How We Developed This Project

Carbon emissions have always been an issue. It is more sensible in our country: You can feel the difference in air going from east part with cities and industry to west part where there are forests and the sea – the main carbon reducers. That’s why this challenge got our attention most.

After going through the data, we found out that there are no data about daily carbon emission that we are responsible for and we have no information of how to approach this problem. That is when we decided to create this project.

We used HTML, CSS and JavaScript for creating our project.

The main problem was the absence of detailed information for our functions. But as a result of many articles and calculations, we managed to find them.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used different articles about carbon emission to calculate detailed indicators.

But the biggest usage was NASA Worldview and Global Maps from Earth Observatory, where by choosing different layers and comparing different seasons, we came to the solution of carbon reduction.

For example, by analyzing data from Earth observatory about carbon exchange and vegatation index, it came 100% clear that carbon reduction and vegetation are in high correlation. So other than suggesting little changes in their daily life , we plan to use that visualizations to ensure people that growing trees can reduce CO2 amount in atmosphere and calculate the amount of trees per year that can cover their footprint.
