What Is Our Carbon Footprint?

Your challenge is to identify local sources of carbon emissions and/or estimate amounts of carbon emissions for different human activities to aid scientists in mapping carbon sources and sinks. How can you inform decisions to adapt to the consequences of a changing world and aid policy makers in making plans for the future?

Summary

Carbon footprint is the extra amount of carbon that our lifestyle adds to the environment. This footprint can be defined across an individual, a family, an organization or group, or an entire nation. CarboLess gives you carbon emission data based on your location. From here you can have an idea about how a little increase in the amount of carbon footprint is impacting our daily lifestyles. We are also focusing on spreading awareness among people. We want people of all ages to contribute in our project so that they can learn about the problems faced by the environment. Therefore, we have included an quiz section.

How We Addressed This Challenge

CarboLess

What did you develop?

We designed a website which have features like Location based Data, Analyzing statistical data , Suggestions on reduction of Carbon and a Quiz part.

Why is it important?

We have added location based data where people can search carbon footprint statics of their area live. We have added this section to make people aware that how their day to day activities impacting in climate change and gradually covering the globe by the veil of poisonous gases which is leading every aspect of earth towards the mouth of hell. Besides , we have included the data analyzing option to make it useful for research and to make policy makers and builders concern for their future plans.

(These features are currently not live)

How We Developed This Project

What Inspired our team to choose this challenge:

A large number of festivals are celebrated every year across all over India. People of India celebrate some festivals like Diwali and Dussehra by burning crackers which adds fuel to the environmental pollution. Every year, tons of carbons are burnt which causes a lot of inconvenience to the people. This is faced by people all over the world. The level of pollution have been increasing rapidly since a few decades . Besides, growing carbon footprint problem is becoming a threat to the biodiversity. We have chosen this challenge to make people aware. We believe that our planet can be cured if people become more concern of their surrounding. We don't have to forget that we're sharing this globe with many other organisms .We have one planet and we people have the power to save our future generations from dying.

What was your approach to developing this project?

After downloading some data. we converted some of them to csv format and tried to analyze them using jupyter notebook, python language , and its library like pandas, matplotlib , etc.

We designed the website using CSS,HTML and Javascript frontend.

What problems and achievements did your team have?

Since we are dealing with netCDF files for the first time, it created a lot of problems to convert them to csv. Also due to unavailability of good internet speed we were able to download only a few data which is not enough for the model we thought of. So we changed our plan of making an app to a website. We couldnot train our model and integrate it with the site.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We downloaded data from MOPITT Co emission data, ODIAC carbon emission from fossil fuel data, and Grided Methane Data.
