What Is Our Carbon Footprint?

Your challenge is to identify local sources of carbon emissions and/or estimate amounts of carbon emissions for different human activities to aid scientists in mapping carbon sources and sinks. How can you inform decisions to adapt to the consequences of a changing world and aid policy makers in making plans for the future?

Summary

Simple data visualization is hard to come by, we built a prototype which displays Canadian CO and CO2 emissions based on Facilities data provided by CSA. We also introduced a Sweden comparison map with CO2 emissions which is one of the greener countries in Europe to help see the difference between the two.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We research a lot of the data sources until we narrowed down the datasets we were happy with.(CSA - Canadian Facilities CO Emissions and ODIAC dataset for CO2 emissions, we used QGIS to combine the two datasets). We were able to develop map which can display either the CO or CO2 emissions, which helps you visualize the emissions in Canada. We hoped to introduce a lot more comparisons to show how bad the emissions are here and raise awareness which would hopefully inspire some action.

How We Developed This Project

We are all work for the same company (NPX - a consulting company for nuclear sector) and clean energy is a big focus for us. The carbon footprint seemed like a relevant challenge. We used React/Express/Postgress SQL with React-Simple-Maps as our main library to visualize data. We were not able to get a custom Canadian map working, so we had to rely on some of the maps provided by the library which were not the greatest for our solution.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We use the Canadian CO Facility emissions - which had all the CO data points for the Canadian map. We also used ODIAC for the CO2 data for both the Canadian and Swedish map.

##NOTE - the backend server is hosted on a free heroku service, usually it "sleeps" after period of inactivity, when visiting the following website if not data is generating in the maps - give it a minute and refresh the page again, the heroku server comes online automatically once there is activity.
