What Is Our Carbon Footprint?

Your challenge is to identify local sources of carbon emissions and/or estimate amounts of carbon emissions for different human activities to aid scientists in mapping carbon sources and sinks. How can you inform decisions to adapt to the consequences of a changing world and aid policy makers in making plans for the future?

ClimAct, The Game

Summary

Homo Ludis are pleased to present “ClimAct”, the app oriented to teach school kids about our Carbon Footprint. This app will: 1) Make kids aware of pollution, greenhouse gases and their harmful effects on our planet.2) Provide them with tools so that they can know their carbon footprint, in order to modify their current consumption habits towards more environmentally friendly ones.3) Offer an updated and synthetic information platform on GHGs emissions in their town, country and the world.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We are aware that pollution and the emission of GHGs is leading us to a climate crisis. We must urgently take action and generate solutions to this problem. We understand that education is a fundamental pillar to generate real changes. From Homo Ludis, we agree that one of the best learning methods is play. For this reason, we developed a collaborative game based on the calculation of the Carbon Footprint.

And that´s the why we create ClimAct! In this app, the kids can:

1) Create their own avatar, that represents them within the app.

2) Estimate their household and comunity Carbon Footprint.

3) Complete challenges, with scoring based in footprint values and contributions

4) Gain Badges and Avatar Perks by completing Footprint reducing familiar and comunitary challenges.

5) Have continuous access to information about provided by NASA and ESA

6) Be able to report on GHGs emission sources of their town in the app's database.

With this app we aim to reach all school-age children, to help them grow up with a different vision, much more aware of the one we ourselves have had on environmental pollution. They will be able to teach their friends, family and neighbors to understand their impact on the environment and how to reduce their carbon footprint.

How We Developed This Project

The first thing that inspired us to choose this challenge was our desire to contribute our time and knowledge for create something that can be useful for make a great change. So, we decided to give our project a playful approach, since we consider that the game is one of the best strategies to assimilate new knowledge.

We used Framer to develope an prototype of our app.

The main problem that arose was that some members of the group had less time than the others and this prevented the idea from being developed in greater depth. However, considering this, we met our personal goals and achieved something very important, generating this idea and cooperating with each other, despite the distance.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We identified OCO-3 as posible source of CO2 Data for local emission source
