What Is Our Carbon Footprint?

Your challenge is to identify local sources of carbon emissions and/or estimate amounts of carbon emissions for different human activities to aid scientists in mapping carbon sources and sinks. How can you inform decisions to adapt to the consequences of a changing world and aid policy makers in making plans for the future?

What is our Carbon Footprint?

Summary

We identified four major local sources of GHGs which are; fossil fuel consumption, domestic aviation, cement production and landfill sites. We mainly collected data from the local sources that are relevant for each category that emits tremendous amounts of carbon dioxide and other GHGs. We collected the data, analyzed it and predicted the emissions in the near future, using resources the space agencies have provided us with. The aim of it all was to create a space where decision-makers and scientists can easily access statistics of the locality.

How We Addressed This Challenge

What did you develop?

We developed a website as it is easily accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

Why is it important?

Anyone who is looking for data on Sri Lankan carbon emissions will have a tough time making a complete report with just a few resources as Sri Lankan census is not readily available. Having used many resource from across the world wide web, we made a comprehensive report that will aid policy-makers.

What does it do?

It informs and analyzes data for the policy makers and scientists to take actions against and to reduce carbon emissions.

How does it work?

It is a very simple website, and it works at the most basic principles.

What do you hope to achieve?

We, as a team of young students who love the environment, hope to make a space where policy makers take necessary actions to reduce the carbon emissions and scientists carry out more thorough projects in order to make our planet a habitable place for future generations.

How We Developed This Project

Inspiration

The tremendous harm that happen to the the environment inspired us to choose this project in order to inform ordinary people, policy makers and scientists how our environment is being damaged.

Tools that were used

Innumerous websites and pdf documents, all which have been mentioned in the footnotes of our website. We used Google Sites to build a user-friendly website.

Problems we faced

We had many problems in finding data under some topics. Data about local emissions in Sri Lanka cannot be found easily.

Achievements

We have now made it easily accessible to policymakers and scientists to find data about local emissions and take quick actions to reduce the GHG emissions in Sri Lanka.
