What Is Our Carbon Footprint?

Your challenge is to identify local sources of carbon emissions and/or estimate amounts of carbon emissions for different human activities to aid scientists in mapping carbon sources and sinks. How can you inform decisions to adapt to the consequences of a changing world and aid policy makers in making plans for the future?

Carbon Small-foot: An attempt at minimizing our carbon footprint

Summary

Carbon emission is a very serious and alarming issue for the human race! The growing levels of GHGs are already affecting lives on earth in every possible way. This is high time that humans should come forward to minimize the perilous effect of such on our planet earth. We aim to minimize the carbon emissions generated through economic activities and to give solutions from the grass-root level itself. We took into consideration different levels of greenhouse emissions from local to national levels. We have targeted Mumbai as it is one of the most polluting cities in the world. Our analysis provides research at micro levels and gives practicals solutions for the same.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We tried to analyze the current scenario and the behavior of humans that is affecting the environment and thus made an effort to introspect the simple yet effective changes that can be made to annihilate the carbon footprint. We have suggested some modifications in the policies that can be implemented to deal with the carbon footprint.

How We Developed This Project
  • Our team realised the ill effects that we have already been facing due to the increasing carbon emissions. Increase in our carbon footprint is a significant problem and it is driving our planet towards destruction.
  • It is high time that everyone understands their responsibility towards the planet and thus start making changes in their lifestyle to make a big impact. This is the reason that we chose this topic.
  • For example The Taj mahal, a wonder of the world that India is known for, is losing its charm when we see that its marble is turning yellow.
  • We can only imagine what the adverse effects of carbon emissions is going to be in the future. We can protect mother earth from getting destroyed. Thus, we decided to find solutions.
  • Through this project we got to evaluate various reports by government authorities in and around Mumbai like Brihanmumbai Municipal corporation, Navi Mumbai Municipal corporation, etc. to gather clear and concise information.
  • A problem that we faced due to the pandemic, was that we had limited access to a large number of people. However, we were able to convince our friends and families to make changes at an individual level.
  • On the other hand, we learned how the Pandemic Covid-19, helped in reducing the carbon emission from the world.
How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Space agency data helped us to get a pellucid picture of the carbon footprint and how it is affecting our planet. Besides, it helped us to gain a clear perception of the areas that are generating the maximum footprint and thus aided us to look for the modifications in the right way at the right places. The data has a major influence in our project as on the basis of the quantitative figures, our solutions have been depicted. We meticulously went through various graphs, pie charts, carbon footprint calculator, data from various climatic researches to prepare our solutions and the modifications that can be made in the policies to deal with the carbon footprint.
