What Is Our Carbon Footprint?

Your challenge is to identify local sources of carbon emissions and/or estimate amounts of carbon emissions for different human activities to aid scientists in mapping carbon sources and sinks. How can you inform decisions to adapt to the consequences of a changing world and aid policy makers in making plans for the future?

Summary

We have created a Responsive Web App that is addressed to mobile platforms. In this app a user can register and log-in to use it. When a user is logged in they can give information about their car so that the app can make calculations about best alternative paths a driver can take to lower their car’s CO2 emission. They will be shown a dashboard with weekly information about their performance and even be put in a leaderboard with other users in a friendly competition to help the earth. Users will have it easy to navigate input and get information from the maps and APIs offered by Google Cloud Platform.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We developed an app that can be used by users of cars and motorcycles to find ways to help the environment and lower their carbon footprint. It also provides real time data that in a possible future can be used by researchers and urbanists to make predictions, compare data, have more accurate data and be inspired to fix problems in our everchanging world.

How We Developed This Project

We started with an web app that would be used on mobile phones

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

This app is made for everyday users who want to make a change in their carbon footprint. By doing this they are providing data that will be used after a specific period of time to help researchers build case studies and compare data from space agencies like NASA and these highly dynamic data. With resources like OCO-3 XCO2 Observations - shows the atmospheric column average CO2 at a point in time and space*, TROPOMI observations*, USGS GloVis Tool*, we were able to make some minor predictions of how our app will help in the future not only to give data to researchers but also inform users and give them a rewarding feel of being able to directly help by bettering their lifestyle.

Our estimations predict a decrease in dioxide carbon emission by automobile users in metropolitan and rural areas. By them using alternative routes they distribute the levels of emission and by our estimations on automobile engine use, users will have their cars and motorcycles work at their best performance and not burning up as much fossil fuels.
