What Is Our Carbon Footprint?

Your challenge is to identify local sources of carbon emissions and/or estimate amounts of carbon emissions for different human activities to aid scientists in mapping carbon sources and sinks. How can you inform decisions to adapt to the consequences of a changing world and aid policy makers in making plans for the future?

Summary

Our project aims to harness the potential of the different types of gases present in the atmosphere generated by our carbon footprint. There are multiple gases that, through various chemical processes, can be converted into useful resources, such as water and fuel. Through the utilization of UAV type vehicles, our objective is to detect, monitor, and harvest these waste gases to utilize them in useful ways to humanity. Also, through the data collected by the drones, we will create readable charts available to everyone, to create awareness of the problem and encourage people to be more careful and aware of the situation.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We think that the difference between waste products and raw materials is just the point of view. What if some of the main waste gases could be used as fuel or other useful resources? Our project tackles the problem in a creative way.

How We Developed This Project

Our experience with UAV´s got us thinking on a way to determine real time gas concentration data on specific areas (such as cities) through certain sensors on a Zeppelin – Drone class vehicle, house them on a container, filter them, and use those waste gases (such as methane) to generate useful and ecological resources.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We started using satellite gas concentration data, which was very useful to target specific areas, that way we just have to control the UAV vehicle to monitor and recollect from those zones.

We think that implementing this technology to the Stratobus type platform from Thales Alenia it’s the perfect candidate for the project, because of the large amount of gas volume it can accommodate, also, the stability of it´s movement allows to carry out the process through extended periods of time without major difficulties.
