What Is Our Carbon Footprint?

Your challenge is to identify local sources of carbon emissions and/or estimate amounts of carbon emissions for different human activities to aid scientists in mapping carbon sources and sinks. How can you inform decisions to adapt to the consequences of a changing world and aid policy makers in making plans for the future?

Spacium Carbon Calculator

Summary

The motive of our project to calculate carbon emissions from surface-based vehicles. For this purpose, we developed a workflow which calculates Carbon dioxide and Carbon Monoxide emissions of vehicles using various mathematical models and compares the results with actual remote sensing-based observations. This provides us with a more informed and accurate view of the Carbon Footprint of vehicles.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our WebApp asks the user the following information,

  • Vehicle Manufacturer
  • Vehicle Type
  • Distance travelled
  • Location coordinates
  • Departure date
  • Arrival date

Using these information we compute the emissions from models and compare it with remote sensing observations.

How We Developed This Project

We used NASA Earthdata and Google Earth Engine for retrieving remote sensing observations. Our backend is built using Python - Flask and frontend using React.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used OCO2 and Fossil Fuels emission datasets by NASA and Sentinel 5p data by European Space Agency to compare the CO2 emissions calculated using mathematical models.
