What Is Our Carbon Footprint?

Your challenge is to identify local sources of carbon emissions and/or estimate amounts of carbon emissions for different human activities to aid scientists in mapping carbon sources and sinks. How can you inform decisions to adapt to the consequences of a changing world and aid policy makers in making plans for the future?

Carbon Footprint of Air Travel

Summary

Carbon Footprint of Air application provides evaluation of air travel of person according to departure airport and arrival airport poins which is chosen by person. The application receives distance, fuel burn per journey, total passengers' CO2 per journey and aircraft information from airport routes database and calculates total carbon footprint by summing fuel burn per journey with total passengers' CO2 per journey. When calculation end application demonstrates 'critical degree of total carbon footprint according to average global carbon footprint value. If carbon footprint passes average global carbon footprint application warns the person and explains importance of travel carbon footprint.

How We Addressed This Challenge

An application has been designed to inform the passenger about the preferability of aircraft travel according to the amount of carbon footprint determined by the distance between the selected departure and arrival airports. Events such as global warming and climate changes that occur due to the increase in CO2 gas in the atmosphere pose a threat to the future of our world. Aircraft are the means of transport with the most share in the carbon footprint. In order to ensure that passengers who prefer to travel by plane are aware of the degree of CO2 they release into the environment, it is aimed to take this factor into account in their travel preference. This application shows information messages in green, orange and red colors according to the total footprint between airports. These colors indicate that the amount of carbon footprint of people who will use airports is at ideal, critical and dangerous levels. With this project, it is aimed to increase awareness of flights that cause high CO2 emissions and reduce the number of people who prefer these flights.

How We Developed This Project

In order to prevent the negative effects on the world that can be caused by the increase in carbon dioxide emissions today, it is of great importance to raise the awareness of society. With this project, we aim to contribute to the awareness of the community on this issue and to take an approach to shaping transportation preferences accordingly. First of all we import excel file that include airport route data to Microsoft SQL Management Studio. Microsoft Management studio turns excel file into a database table file (database: carbon, table Sayfa1.dbo) . We choose Windows Forms App. in c# language to create project and connect database to visual studio server explorer. With connected database we include System.Data.SqlClient to code and with its functions read the data from database table file. In data reading part we get fuel burn and total passengers's CO2 information to calculate total carbon footprint of travel. Also in reading part we write distance, fuel burn, total passengers and aircraft information to form page.We had a good teamwork experience during the development of this project. As a result of the information passed on to each other by the group members, each group member increased their knowledge and experience. Due to the resource restriction, we have not been able to implement some of the ideas we want to focus on.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We use space agency data to reach carbon footprint of each air travel route (for example; DUB(Dublin) - TLV(Tel Aviv)) and according to two airport location we get Distance(km), Aircraft fuel burn/Journey(KG) , Total passengers' CO2/Journey(KG) and Aircraft type datas.
