Mission to Planet Earth: A Digital History

NASA’s activities in space have brought new knowledge of the Earth, inspiring new ways of thinking about humanity and the planet. However, many people aren’t aware that NASA studies the Earth in addition to other planets. Your challenge is to tell stories of NASA’s Earth science enterprise using interactive digital tools. This will test your technical skills and your ability to think like a historian or educator.

Inception

Summary

A tremendous amount of people are unaware that NASA studies the earth as well as other planets. Our challenge is to notify mankind about NASA's inspirational stories and achievements in the astronomy and earth science fields. Our idea is mainly based on constructing an interactive website that represents one of the most important programs in NASA's history and one of the most important turning points in humanity’s history: the Apollo program. This website—including articles, documentaries—presents historical Apollo missions from Apollo 1-10 till Apollo 11, in which Neil Armstrong become the first human to land on any celestial body (especially the moon), in a filmed walkthrough documentary.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The challenge states that “NASA’s activities in space have brought new knowledge of the Earth, inspiring new ways of thinking about humanity and the planet. However, many people aren’t aware that NASA explored the Earth in addition to other planets”. This ignorance of NASA agency efforts is the unawareness of human development in many different branches of science, which should be solved by new technological ways to inform people about how NASA made the impossible come true. The ideas stared with the only video about the inception of the Earth planet and our solar system. Then, it had another turning point: focusing on the moon -the nearest treasure- to know more about its exploration history. After deciding that the discussed topic will be the history of the moon’s explorations and definitely, we couldn’t find anything more important and influential than Apollo’s missions. According to the challenge, the Apollo missions was must be told using interactive tools. Thus, an interactive website, as a solution, was developed to document Apollo missions’ achievements. Each mission is uploaded on the website with its article summary, video or its link, and some questions. The website was built, inducing you to go in a sequence for Apollo missions. Each mission starts with a made video or link for a video, followed by a summary. At last, Questions pop up on the website, making the website interactive. If the questions are answered wrong, the video will be played over again. The sequence of the made videos, website, and questions are crucial for allowing the visitor to know as many details as possible. Therefore, achieving the desired target is spreading knowledge regarding NASA’s achievements and missions.

How We Developed This Project

A lot of people do not know that NASA is researching the Earth and other planets. Our challenge is to tell the public of the exciting stories and accomplishments of NASA in the fields of astronomy and earth sciences. Our project is primarily focused on the creation of an interactive platform that represents one of the most important programs in NASA's history and one of the biggest achievements in the history of NASA: the Apollo program. therefore, by narrating stories with influential accurate words, encouraging people to achieve a better outcome for mankind. First of all, by exploring the data on the official NASA space app website and NASA resources, we tackled the challenge. Second, each of us looked for innovative solutions to this challenge after understanding it from all the aspects. Then, we brainstormed and debated until the optimal solution was reached. Finally, we decided to create an interactive platform (website) to address this challenge, which includes games, documentaries, and games website: The following languages were used in the development of this website: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery. In creating the head and the body of this website and arranging them, HTML was used. In styling the website, CSS was used to change the color of some figures, change their height, etc. In making animations, such as creating a drop-down list in the navbar, etc., JavaScript and jQuery were used. Documentaries: In making the documentaries, we collected data from NASA and the provided space agencies (CSA, JAXA, and CNES) resources. Subsequently, Summary articles for each Apollo mission were written, and Scenarios were made. After that, Adobe Premiere was used to create, edit, and generate videos for documentaries. After each documentary, a game or quiz-like questions were made, ensuring that the viewer understood as many details as possible.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Our challenge required us to search and gather information from different resources and ensure their validity. We represented these data in an interactive and simple platform to make certain that our learner feels comfortable while using it. we collected data from NASA and the provided space agencies (ESA, JAXA, and CNES) resources that we used in making the documentaries and summaries, we collected data(such as articles, scenes, 3d models, and pictures). we collected our data from these specific resources to make sure that our learner feels reassured about the credibility of our information and to inspire him or her to explore more in the interesting history of NASA.
