Mission to Planet Earth: A Digital History

NASA’s activities in space have brought new knowledge of the Earth, inspiring new ways of thinking about humanity and the planet. However, many people aren’t aware that NASA studies the Earth in addition to other planets. Your challenge is to tell stories of NASA’s Earth science enterprise using interactive digital tools. This will test your technical skills and your ability to think like a historian or educator.

Mission to Planet Earth: A Digital History

Summary

Our objective is to make a visually interactive tool for kids to make them aware of what is NASA and that NASA not only studies planets, meteors and other celestial bodies found in space but also our very own planet from up above. The website will be visually interactive having a chat bot and a virtual tour to help kids navigate through the site, it also has a gallery and flip book which will contain a brief insight into NASA's contribution to the same. The gallery will have landsat pictures from space which will be informative and encourage kids .

How We Addressed This Challenge

We developed a website, our aim was to make it visually as attractive yet simple as possible to be able to develop an interest in kids towards space , NASA and our planet. Unknowingly, human beings exploit the nature without knowing its consequences therefore it is first important for people to know about our planet be it mountains, active or dormant volcanoes etc so that we come up with ways which can protect our home and what better than to convey all this to kids who can grow up and then work towards it?

Our project is a website that helps convey information bout our planet, space and NASA's contribution in the simplest yet visually attractive way possible. It would contain a flip book to give an insight into the same , gallery , quizzes a virtual tour and a chat bot to attract kids and help them understand the same.

We hope to instill passion in the young minds regarding our planet and come up with ways to conserve nature and protect it from further exploitation.

How We Developed This Project

A child looking up at the starry night sky often wonders how does it feel like to be up there mostly how would the planet one calls home would look like? To help children fuel their curiosity and develop a passion towards the space around us giving utmost importance to knowledge about our planet Earth and NASA's role in it was the motivation behind selecting this challenge, as a child I have always been intrigued and mesmerised by the celestial bodies, we wanted to deliver the same to small kids.

With the given time we of developing a highly interactive and simple website which would eventually include a flip book so as to tell people about NASA' s contribution to the study of our planet. We in a team of two, simultaneously developed a web site and flip book. The softwrae used for both was Sublime Text 3 and Brackets. The languages used were, HTML5, CSS3, JAVASCRIPT AND JQUERY.

We were able to make a website with a gallery tab and include photos from the given resources and develop a flip book which has a mini gallery and a page for audio as well But were unable to develop quizzes / chatbot for the site too due to time constraint and limited number of team members.

  1. Home

This picture shows the home page of the website which we developed consisting of tabs like gallery, e book, blog, challenges etc. It is easily navigable. When clicked, the respective buttons will be directed to their respective pages.

  1. Gallery

This image shows the gallery page which is shows pictures in grid view taken from nasa's official site.

3.Flipbook

This image shows the flip book which contains information regarding NASA and how has NASA contributed to the studies of our planet.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used data mainly from the official site of NASA history division. We made included the photos from their site that visiblearth.nasa.gov and many more resources were made use of. The images were used in our site in the gallery tab and in the flip book in a need to make it as visually and graphically attractive as possible. Some of the information was taken from solarsystem.nasa.gov as well.
